OnePlus has finally started to roll out its OxygenOS 11 operating system, which incorporates all of the features found in Android 11, to its OnePlus 7 and 7T smartphone series. These handsets were launched May and October 2019, respectively.

OnePlus has a solid track record when it comes to Android updates. The Shenzhen-based company is almost always one of the first manufacturers to launch the next-generation version of Android to its handset – beating more established brands like Samsung, LG, and Sony.

However, OnePlus has been a little slower than usual with Android 11. The functionality that Google bundled into this update has been incorporated into OxygenOS 11, which has a much more distinct visual style than previous OnePlus updates, which tended to look almost indistinguishable from Google’s stock Android. OnePlus has also taken the opportunity to add some much-requested features, like an always-on display, to its operating system. However, the latter has been left out of the OnePlus 7T Pro update for now, with the feature still dwindling in the beta version.

Bringing new features to this updated visual style, which has been designed to make using smartphones with larger screens one-handed a little easier by shunting down all the elements that need to be touched to the lower-third of the touchscreen, clearly takes a little longer.

As well as its own visual flair and all of Google’s new features, OnePlus has also added some new features of its own into the mix too. The update includes custom time ranges for dark mode – so your phone can automatically switch between light and dark modes at any time – as well as quick-reply messaging windows in Game Space.

Unfortunately, all of this has resulted in OnePlus taking much longer than usual to roll out its Android 11 update to its OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7T series.

OnePlus introduces their new 9 series smartphone

Not only that, OnePlus is only including the February security patch from Google as part of the initial roll out of OxygenOS 11. So, those who rush to upgrade to the shiny new version of the mobile operating system on their OnePlus 7 and 7T series, users will be outdated by almost two months out-of-the-gate. Fingers crossed OnePlus is a little quicker when it comes to pushing out the new security update.

The arrival of OxygenOS 11 comes more than five months after Android 11 features became available on OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro. Meanwhile, the more-affordable OnePlus Nord has only recently received its update too.

OnePlus has committed to bringing new devices at least three years of software and security updates. However, there is still no word on whether the OnePlus 6 and 6T series will see OxygenOS 11 and Android 11, with OnePlus only committing to providing “more details later”.
