Apple has just given the world its very first glimpse of its new iPhones, which include a 15 and 15 Pro and, despite some blockbuster updates, there’s one massive change that’s not going to have everyone jumping for joy. As most of the rumours in the build-up to the launch had suggested, the next batch of call makers coming out of Cupertino are all ditching the Lightning port and switching to USB-C instead.

Yes, that means all of those cables that currently refill your iPhone 12, iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 won’t work with the iPhone 15.

It might seem like like a controversial decision from the US firm but with an EU rule change looming it was inevitable that this device might adopt that charging port. From 2024, all new gadgets sold in Europe must feature a standard USB-C port and that includes the iPhone.

Apple has clearly decided that it’s better to adopt this way of refilling sooner rather than later.

Although it’s not ideal if you have a drawer full of Lightning cables, there are some advantages of USB-C. Firstly, Apple already uses this port on its laptops and iPads which means one lead now refills all of your gadgets.

Then there’s charging as you can now use your iPhone to refill other devices such as AirPods.
