US streaming service Peacock is not available as a standalone subscription in the UK, so Sky and NOW viewers enjoy exclusive access to shows like Bel-Air and Saturday Night Live. Discovery+ costs £6.99 per month as a standalone subscription, but is included at no extra cost with all Sky TV packages, and offers access to exclusive documentaries and dramas like Richard Hammond’s Workshop, Peter Crouch: Save Our Beautiful Game, and Vardy vs Rooney: The Wagatha Trial.

Netflix, known for hit shows like Bridgerton, Black Mirror, Making A Murderer, and Stranger Things, costs £6.99 per month. Although the subscription is included with your Sky Ultimate TV package, you’ll still get a standalone login for Netflix and can watch from your iPhone, Android, iPad, consoles, or other set-top boxes like Fire TV and Roku.

Sky Cinema customers enjoy access to Paramount+ (worth £6.99 per month) to watch the likes of Top Gun: Maverick, Scream 5, Yellowjackets and 1923 as well as exclusive blockbusters included from Sky Cinema. Like Netflix, you’ll get a login to watch Paramount+ on other apps too.

Once signed-in, Sky will start to intelligently recommend shows and films from these services based on your tastes.

Should you buy Sky Glass, Sky Stream, or Sky Q?

Settling on the best Sky deal for you is a little tougher than it used to be as Sky now offers three ways to watch its exclusive channels and boxsets at home. Before you even start to think about the bundle of channels and optional extras that would be best suited to your tastes …you’ll need to decide on a set-top box.

Sky offers three hardware options: Sky Glass, Sky Stream, and Sky Q.

Below, we’ve compared the features and performance of these competing boxes to help you find the best fit for your home.

    Why Sky Stream?

Sky Stream is the most recent addition to the lineup.

It’s powered by Sky’s custom-designed EntertainmentOS – just like Sky Glass, so you’ll find the same menu design and software tricks across both devices. But while Sky Glass is an all-in-one QLED TV, Sky Stream squeezes everything into a palm-sized box that can be plugged into any television around your home.

As such, Sky Stream really feels like the next-generation successor to the likes of the Sky Q box. If you don’t want the expense of buying a new QLED TV or are perfectly happy with your current set-up, Sky Stream is a superb choice.

As the name suggests, there’s no need for a satellite dish on the outside of your home with everything streamed over a Wi-Fi connection. That means anyone who lives in an apartment building without a communal dish or a rented property will be able to watch Sky TV for the first time …although you will need a halfway decent broadband connection.

Sky Stream is available as part of an 18-month contract – like Sky Q or traditional Sky+ HD boxes – or with a 31-day rolling contract. While the latter costs a little more, it means you’ll be able to subscribe and cancel Sky TV multiple times throughout the year, just like Netflix or Sky-owned NOW (formerly NOW TV).

If you want to stream exclusive shows like The Last Of UsHouse of the Dragon, Gangs of London, The White Lotus, and The Rehearsal as they air on Sky each week, Sky Stream will let you watch in crisp Ultra HD, HDR, and Dolby Atmos surround sound.

Bundled with Sky Stream, you’ll find the same next-generation remote control that ships with Sky Glass.

That means you’ll get backlit buttons to make late-night viewing easier, as well as voice commands to find new shows, movies with your favourite actor, and open streaming services built into the set-top box, like Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+, Prime Video, and more.

Want to know whether Sky Stream can compete with Sky Glass or Sky Q? Our in-depth Sky Stream review has all of the answers.

With an 18-month contract, Sky Stream costs exactly the same as Sky Q – £26 per month with an 18-month contract. Although it’s worth noting that Sky Q arrives with 300 live channels whereas Sky Stream viewers only get 150 channels to watch. The latter are all in 1080p HD at no extra cost, something Sky Q owners still have to pay for!

Both of these options include a Netflix and discovery+ subscription for free (worth £6.99 per month each when bought separately) access to exclusive shows from US streamer Peacock, 500 on-demand boxsets from HBO and Sky Originals. If you want the same bundle with a 31-day rolling contract via Sky Stream, you’ll need to pay £29 per month.

    Why Sky Glass?

Sky Glass is a very different proposal from everything else in the lineup.

Yes, it allows you to watch the latest must-see boxset from Sky Originals or HBO, like Sky Stream and Sky Q …but it’s also a modern QLED TV with a built-in Dolby Atmos soundbar available in a range of stylish pastel colours. It also supports hands-free voice commands, so you can bark orders to switch channels, pause live telly, or find shows with a specific actor.

If you’re looking to upgrade to a new TV, this sleek all-in-one solution can stream live broadcasts over Wi-Fi and supports all of the biggest streaming services, including Disney+, Netflix, Prime Video, Apple TV+, ITVX, BBC iPlayer, and many more. There are also games and step-by-step fitness workouts included in the telly too.

Since everything is beamed wirelessly via Wi-Fi to your telly, that means you won’t need to worry about an engineer drilling holes into the outside walls of your home (handy if you’re renting, or living in an apartment building) and set-up is as easy as plugging in a single power cable to Sky Glass.

Sky Glass can be bought outright – like any other new telly from a shop – or can be paid in monthly instalments with your chosen Sky TV bundle. This makes the upgrade more affordable. Like Sky Stream, your TV is a rolling monthly contract, so you can switch between packages, like Sky Cinema and Sky Sports, every 30-days or so.

If you stop subscribing to Sky TV entirely, you can continue to use Sky Glass to watch Freeview channels and streamers.

While it’s possible to buy Sky Glass outright, the satellite company also offers its all-new QLED TV in small monthly instalments, starting from as little as £14 per month. You can add Sky TV packages with a 31-day rolling contract, switching between Sky Cinema, Sky Sports, and other bundles each month.

    Why Sky Q?

Rounding out the lineup from Sky is the tried-and-tested Sky Q box, which has won every industry award in its category, can pause and rewind live television, record up to six channels while you watch a seventh, arrives with Dolby Atmos and 4K Ultra HD compatibility, boasts voice controls, and can store up to 150 hours of recorded telly in High Definition.

Sky Q was announced as the heir to Sky+HD back in 2015 in a flurry of excitement. It launched the following year and, aside from a few tweaks to the hardware (most notably to add support for HDR), it’s remained largely unchanged since then.

This hugely-popular set-top box (seriously, there are millions of these plugged into TVs across the UK) still requires a satellite dish, which could be perfect if your home broadband speeds aren’t quite speedy enough to stream everything to Sky Glass.

Sky recently increased the cost of Sky Q from £28 to £31 per month.

That’s an additional £54 over the course of a typical 18-month contract. Thankfully, there is still a way to save, thanks to our exclusive deal that drops the cost of Sky Q down to £23 per month – making it comfortably the cheapest way to watch Sky TV.

While it might not be the latest kit from the Sky R&D lab (you’ll find yourself waiting for features that rolled out to Sky Glass and Sky Stream months earlier …and that’s if the features arrive at all), but Sky Q remains a solid set-top box. In fact, it earned a full five stars in our Sky Q review

So… which one is right for you?

Well, no matter whether you pick Sky Glass, Sky Stream, or Sky Q to watch your favourite Sky TV channels… you’ll be signed up for the same basic package of channels, dubbed Ultimate TV. This bundle includes a Netflix subscription and shows from US streaming service Peacock.

Crucially, this isn’t a Netflix subscription that only works on your Sky box – it’s a fully-fledged subscription that you can watch on any Netflix app, including those on iPhone, iPad, Fire TV, and Android. Viewing history and Watchlist will be synchronised across devices, so you’ll see any changes made on your phone reflected on your Sky kit, and vice versa.

If you already have a Netflix subscription, you’ll be able to keep your existing account with viewing history and bundle the monthly bill as part of your Sky subscription so that it’s easier to manage. It also means you won’t start from scratch with new recommendations based on your tastes.

    Best Sky deals with Netflix

Since October 2019, Sky has included a Netflix subscription with all of its TV bundles.

Currently branded as the Ultimate TV bundle, the entry-level bundle from Sky includes access to a wide selection of linear channels that aren’t available on Freeview, as well as 500 on-demand boxsets from Sky Originals and HBO, as well as that all-important Netflix subscription.

Your Netflix membership isn’t limited to your Sky Q, Sky Stream, or Sky Glass hardware either. It functions as a standard subscription, so you’ll be able to download and sign-in to Netflix apps on your phone, tablet, consoles, and other devices.

Netflix synchronises playback across devices too, so you can start bingeing a boxset on your Sky Q box, then pick up at the exact spot where you left off on your iPhone on the train to work, for example.

You’ll be able to stream some of the most talked-about shows of the last few years, including Sex Education, The Witcher, Bridgerton, The Haunting Of Hill House, Making A Murderer, Tiger King, Queer Eye, Selling Sunset, The Good Place, and more.

Netflix is tightly integrated into Sky Stream, Sky Q, and Sky Glass, with new shows and films suggested on the homepage all of the time. Sky will track what you’re watching and recommend similar shows from across its own channels, on-demand content, and Netflix.

You can use the voice search functionality built into Sky to check Netflix’s catalogue too – so you won’t need to worry about the hassle of typing out the name of a show, actor, or director with the alphanumeric keypad at the bottom of your Sky TV remote!

Whenever you search on your Sky box, the software will check upcoming TV listings, the catalogue of 500 on-demand boxsets included with the Ultimate TV bundle, Sky Store, as well as Netflix’s catalogue. So you’ll never have to worry about accidentally renting something on Sky Store that you later discover was included in your Netflix subscription.

As well as Netflix, the Ultimate TV bundle also arrives with access to exclusive shows and films from streaming service Peacock. Available as a standalone subscription in the United States, Sky has partnered with Peacock to incorporate its entire back catalogue as well as upcoming exclusive boxsets and movies into its Ultimate TV bundle at no extra cost.

That means you’ll be able to tune in to the Saved by the Bell revival as well as Rutherford Falls, Punky Brewster, The Girl in the Woods, Five Bedrooms, and Vanderpump Rules. Upcoming Peacock shows, like the dramatisation of the events covered in the Tiger King documentary broadcast on Netflix (also available for Ultimate TV subscribers) dubbed Joe Exotic and starring Kate McKinnon and Kyle MacLachlan, will be coming to Sky Q and Sky Glass very soon. All-new shows like Vampire Academy, Irreverent, The Innocent, The Resort, The Missing, The Best Man, Angelyne, Ted, and Battlestar Galactica, which appear exclusively to Peacock subscribers in the United States, will appear soon on Sky set-top boxes.

Other highlights from the Peacock library include The Office (US), Parks and Recreation, 30 Rock, Psych, Superstore, A.P. Bio, The Mindy Project, Will & Grace, Mr. Mayor, Young Rock, and Saturday Night Live, alongside popular dramas such as Battlestar Galactica, Monk, Bates Motel, Heroes, Friday Night Lights, 12 Monkeys, Downton Abbey, House, Suits, Quantum Leap, Warehouse 13, The Equalizer, and Grimm, and talked-about unscripted hits like Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Million Dollar Listing, Below Deck and The Real Housewives.

Peacock also packs some must-watch movies, including Brüno, Bulletproof, Children of Men, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Game, Hanna, Hannibal, The Last House on the Left, MacGruber, A Million Ways to Die in the West, Meet Joe Black, O Brother, Where Art Thou?Seed of Chucky, A Simple Wish, The Skeleton Key, Tower Heist, United 93, Very Bad Things, What Dreams May Come, and You, Me, and Dupree.

Sky Stream doesn’t require a satellite dish – live television is streamed over Wi-Fi. The diddy set-top box arrives with a Netflix subscription as standard. Unlike Sky Q, you’ll get High Definition (HD) picture quality as standard

    FREE next-day delivery | Set-up costs: £20 / £39.95 | Contract length: 18-months / 31-days

If you want to upgrade to a brand-new 4K TV to enjoy the latest shows on Netflix, Sky Glass is a great option. Starting from £14 per month for the 43-inch model and rising to £22 a month for the 65-inch screen, this is an affordable way to get your hands on a new telly

    Set-up costs: £10 | Free delivery nationwide

Given that Netflix alone costs £6.99 a month – and this deal arrives with the award-winning Sky Q kit, hundreds of live satellite channels, exclusive US series and films from Peacock, access to 500 on-demand boxsets, and more, means it’s pretty special

    Set-up costs: £20 | Contract length: 18-months

    Best Sky deals with Paramount+

Paramount+ (pronounced “Paramount Plus”) launched in the UK in June 2022, bringing hundreds of hours of must-see films like Scream 5, Mean Girls, and Pulp Fiction as well as exclusive boxsets, including Yellowstone, Halo, and Queens Of The Universe, to name a few. Paramount+ also packs a wealth of children’s TV shows, like SpongeBob SquarePants, PAW Patrol, Rugrats and new spin-offs based on Nickelodeon’s most beloved characters, like Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years.

The Paramount+ streaming platform is available to watch on a number of popular devices, including iPhones, iPad, Android handsets, Samsung Smart TVs …and Sky Q and Sky Glass. But the good news doesn’t stop there. Sky Cinema subscribers will be able to watch everything in the Paramount+ catalogue at no extra cost.

For the same monthly fee, you’ll be able to enjoy the exclusive Paramount+ boxsets, as well as new movies like Top Gun: Maverick, Clifford The Big Red Dog, and The Lost City as these films stream on Paramount+ following their run in UK cinemas. Given that a Paramount+ subscription alone costs £6.99 per month (although there is a Paramount Plus free trial available to those who haven’t subscribed to the platform before), this is a serious saving for Sky TV customers.

If you haven’t already got Sky Cinema, you add this blockbuster extra to your Sky TV bundle below…

When you subscribe to Sky Cinema, you’ll unlock hundreds of hours of television shows and movies to binge! It’s all thanks to a free subscription to Paramount+ (usually £6.99 per month) to watch on your Sky Glass, Sky Q, or on any device with a Paramount+ app

Best Sky deals with Sky Sports

One of the best perks of picking up a Sky TV subscription is access to its unrivalled sports coverage. Sky Sports has exclusive rights to a number of Premier League matches, award-winning coverage of the Formula 1, live coverage of golf, cricket, tennis, NFL, and more.

Sky has rebranded its Sky Sports channels based on the sport they primarily cover – of course, these can change throughout the year, but for now, subscribers will be able to access Sky Sports Main Event HD (the biggest fixture of any sport taking place right now), Sky Sports Premier League HD, Sky Sports Football HD, Sky Sports NFL HD, Sky Sports F1 HD, Sky Sports Golf HD, Sky Sports Cricket HD, and Sky Sports Arena HD (this broadcasts all of the action from sports not represented by dedicated channels, including rugby, boxing, tennis, and a number of other sports).

As always, you’ll be able to pause and rewind the action as it takes place with your Sky Q or Sky Glass kit – so you’ll never miss a moment.

If you’ve added a Sky Sports bundle to your account, this will be reflected in the recommendations made on the main menu of your box. So, if there’s a major sports fixture taking place, you’ll see shortcuts to jump into the action when you switch on your telly in the morning. Sky Glass refreshes its suggestions six times a day to make sure they’re always as timely as possible, while older Sky Q boxes provide a similar experience.

Unlike with the standard Ultimate TV bundle, you won’t need to pay extra for High Definition for the Sky Sports channels. By default, all eight channels will be available in the pixel-packed format. You can pay extra to boost this quality to 4K Ultra HD though.

Unlock all Sky Sports channels, including Sky Sports Main Event, Sky Sports Premier League, and Sky Sports Golf. And unlike other channel bundles from Sky, its sports coverage arrives in High Definition as standard!

    Contract length: 18-months

For a limited time, Sky has slashed £90 off the cost of its Sky Sports package. This bundle, which usually costs £51 per month, includes the award-winning Sky Stream box, a complete Netflix subscription, and all Sky Sports channels!

    Set-up costs: £0 | Contract length: 18-months

Get the complete Sky Sports package, as well as everything 300 TV channels, including Sky Atlantic, 500 on-demand boxsets, and a Netflix subscription. With its 4K QLED screen and built-in Dolby Atmos soundbar, Glass should provide a brilliant viewing on match day!

    Set-up costs: £10 | Free delivery nationwide

Best Sky deals with Sky Cinema

Want to bring the multiplex to you? Then, you’ll want to add Sky Cinema to your Sky TV subscription.

Previously known as Sky Movies, this bundle of channels brings some of the latest Hollywood blockbusters. Sky also produces a number of ‘Sky Original’ films, including the Academy Award-winning Promising Young Woman, which took home the gong for Best Original Screenplay back in early 2021. The part-psychological thriller, part-black comedy is available to anyone who subscribes to Sky Cinema and can be viewed in up to 4K Ultra HD quality.

Sky Original films are released to Sky Cinema subscribers on the same day as they launch on the silver screen in your local multiplex.

Sky Cinemas has a rotating selection of films, with a new addition every day. These can be downloaded on-demand to your Sky Q or Sky Glass kit, downloaded to a smartphone or tablet to watch on-the-move for those who pay extra for Sky Go, or viewed as they air live on the Sky Cinema channels, which include Sky Cinema Premiere, Sky Cinema Greats, Sky Cinema Disney, Sky Cinema Family, Sky Cinema Action, Sky Cinema Comedy, Sky Cinema Sci-Fi and Horror, and more.

Sky also launches a number of themed live channels, such as Sky Cinema Tom Cruise and Sky Cinema Harry Potter, which stick to their theme 24 hours a day.

Movie fans can also use the voice search features included with Sky Q and hands-free with Sky Glass to test their knowledge. While the feature lets you shout the name of the film, actor, or director you’re looking for… it also lets you say well-known quotes from movies to find the title. For example, shouting “Where’s the money?” into your remote will load the listing for Jerry Maguire. Movie buffs can have a lot of fun working out which films in Sky Cinema’s pretty expansive catalogue have been updated to support this feature.

Coupled with the original films included as part of the bundled Netflix subscription, there should be no shortage of movies to watch with these deals. As mentioned above, Sky Cinema subscribers can also access the complete Paramount+ library too, bringing movies like Scream 5, Clifford The Big Red Dog, The Lost City, and Top Gun: Maverick to your Sky Q or Sky Glass.

With Sky Stream, you won’t need a satellite dish to watch the latest blockbusters from Sky Cinema and Paramount+. You’ll also enjoy a huge discount for the first month of your subscription!

    FREE next-day delivery | Set-up costs: £20 / £39.95 | Contract length: 18-months / 31-days

Sky Cinema unlocks access to some of the latest Hollywood blockbusters as well as Sky Original films, which are available to subscribers on the same day as they arrive in your local multiplex

    Set-up costs: £20 | Contract length: 18-months

Want to upgrade to a new telly before you dive into the 500 on-demand boxsets, Netflix catalogue, and movies on offer from Sky Cinema? This is the bundle for you!

And if you haven’t got time to read thousands of words on these products, here’s the short version: we awarded 3 stars to Sky Glass, while Sky Stream and Sky Q got the full 5 stars.

    Best Sky broadband deals

What makes Sky’s broadband offering so brilliant is how effortlessly simple the satellite company makes it for you. There are four options – Superfast, Ultrafast, Ultrafast Plus, and Gigafast. These packages unlock average download speeds of either 59Mbps, 145Mbps (that’s over twice as fast as the average home broadband speed in the UK), 500Mbps (more than 7x faster than most in the UK), or 900Mbps (more than 12x faster than the average home broadband connection).

Unfortunately, not all of these broadband packages are available nationwide as the fastest speeds are limited to those who have been upgraded to Openreach full-fibre …that’s roughly 32% of UK homes, according to the latest estimates from the team at Sky.

Regardless of what download speed you opt for, all of these broadband plans arrive with unlimited downloads, so you’ll never need to worry about extra charges no matter how much data you’ve used over the last month. For those who sign-up for the Superfast and Ultrafast bundles, you’ll be provided with an optional landline. Sky also offers a speed guarantee – if your internet connection drops below this minimum threshold, the satellite company will refund you for the month.

It’s worth noting that Ultrafast Plus and Gigafast are only available in areas that have been upgraded to full-fibre connections by Openreach, which is around 20 percent of all homes in the UK. BT-owned Openreach, which installs and manages the broadband infrastructure for Sky, TalkTalk, EE, Plusnet, Vodafone and more, hopes to upgrade 25 million homes to next-generation full-fibre broadband by December 2026. You can check whether your street has been upgraded to full-fibre here.

Using our links to place your Sky broadband order means you’ll find the £19.95 upfront cost waived – dropping the costs when signing-up to a new broadband plan. Better still, some of the fastest fibre speeds have also been dropped, with these discounts available for the duration of your 18-month minimum contract term too!

While 59Mbps isn’t the fastest, it’s more than enough to stream Netflix and Sky Stream. Busier households might want more bandwidth though…

    Download speeds: 59Mbps | Upload speeds: 18Mbps | Set-up costs: £0 | Contract length: 18-months | Speed Available Nationwide

With download speeds twice as fast as the average UK home broadband speed, Sky Ultrafast will ensure you can binge boxsets in crisp 4K Ultra HD and make video calls without a stutter!

    Available In 32% of UK Homes | Download speeds: 145Mbps | Upload speeds: 27Mbps | Set-up costs: £0 | Contract length: 18-months

Want to banish buffering from your home for good? This lightning-fast full-fibre Ultrafast Plus package is just the ticket as it will unleash speeds of 500Mbps, with guaranteed download speeds of 400Mbps – that’s higher than BT and Virgin Media!

    Available In 24% of UK Homes | Download speeds: 500Mbps | Upload speeds: 60Mbps | Set-up costs: £0 | Contract length: 18-months

Gigfast is the latest addition to Sky Broadband’s lineup and unlocks some of the fastest speeds available in the UK. With average download speeds of 900Mbps – you’ll never have to worry about buffering or broken video calls!

    Available In 24% of UK Homes | Download speeds: 900Mbps | Upload speeds: 90Mbps | Set-up costs: £0 | Contract length: 18-months

What broadband speed do you need?

If you have a busy household with multiple people making video calls, streaming boxsets from Netflix, Disney+ or Sky, backing up photos to the cloud, or downloading software updates for their smartphones, laptops, tablets, and games consoles… we really wouldn’t recommend opting for anything less than the Ultrafast bundle.

Not only does that boast at least 145Mbps download speeds, but you’ll also get faster upload speeds of 27Mbps, which is important when making video calls and uploading data to online storage, like iCloud, Google Drive, or Microsoft Teams. Latest news on Sky TV

Want more information on the latest changes from Sky TV? Have some questions about the latest deals from Sky? Express.co.uk has rounded up the latest announcements from the satellite company on its hardware, including the award-winning Sky Q and all-new Sky Glass, as well as answers to some of the most frequently asked questions for those considering signing up for the paid-for television service for the first time…

    Sky Live launches

    June 22, 2023

Sky Live was teased during the launch event for Sky Glass back in October 2021 …and now, over 18-months after that brief glimpse, the final version is available to buy. Sky Live is halfway between a high-resolution webcam and an Xbox Kinect.

It unlocks a number of brand-new experiences in the Sky Glass menu, including fitness classes (with personalised feedback on your form to avoid injury), motion-controlled games for younger viewers, and Zoom calls from the comfort of your sofa.

You can also watch live or on-demand shows, sports and movies together with friends on-camera to see and hear their reaction to what’s happening on-screen. Playback is synchronised across up to 12 different households, so one person can pause the action for everyone while they quickly dash to make another cuppa before the latest dramatic recoupling in Love Island.

Sky Live only works with Sky Glass, so unfortunately, those with a Sky Stream or Sky Q set-top box are out of luck.

Prices start from £6 per month, which includes access to the Mvmnt video classes and all games. You can choose to pay for Sky Live monthly or pay £290 outright in the Sky Store.

Upgrade your Sky Glass experience with Sky Live – a high-resolution webcam that offers video calling from the comfort of your sofa, gesture-based gaming with friends and family, and advanced fitness coaching with Mvmnt

New apps for Sky Stream, Sky Glass, and Sky Q

    May 5, 2023

Sky has rolled-out new apps for all three models of its telly hardware, with catch-up service My5 coming to Sky Stream and Sky Glass for the first time. For those who don’t know, My5 allows you to stream on-demand shows from Channel 5 as well as sister channels, 5 STAR, 5 USA, 5 SELECT and 5 ACTION. QVC channels were also added to the TV Guide of both Stream and Glass too.

Meanwhile, Sky Q owners can now watch on-demand content from STV. This standalone app, which has been available on Sky Glass and Sky Stream since launch, unlocks access to thousands of hours of new shows for Q viewers.

Lastly, the EntertainmentOS operating system that powers Sky Glass was updated to improve the efficiency of its far-field microphone feature, which enables hands-free voice controls. With the update installed, Sky says that functionality will use less energy – perfect for those concerned about rising electricity bills at the moment.

    ITVX comes to Sky Q

    February 24, 2023

An update to Sky Q has finally brought ITVX – the all-new streaming service that incorporates exclusive content from BritBox – to the popular set-top box. ITVX has been available on Sky Stream and Sky Glass since the streamer launched in late 2022.

However, these gadgets are both powered by Entertainment OS. In comparison, Sky Q relies on its own distinct operating system – even when this ageing hardware (Sky Q is the only set-top box in the Sky TV line-up that still requires a satellite dish and uses a physical hard-drive) is compatible with the same features as Glass and Stream, it takes some time for the same functionality to be developed and rolled-out to Sky Q viewers nationwide. Of course, not everything that’s possible with the newer systems can be replicated on Sky Q, which is why you’ll find some features missing compared to the latest set-top boxes.

The arrival of ITVX unlocks a huge amount of new content for Sky Q viewers. New boxsets created exclusively by ITV Studios for the streamer, like A Spy Among Friends, Litvinenko, and Nolly, as well as syndicated shows, such as The Sex Lives Of College Girls, have been inaccessible for Sky Q viewers until now. Given that ITV Hub was never available on Sky Q, some viewers will have a lot of catching up to do!

Sky Stream and Glass TVs get huge software update

    February 2, 2023

Sky has started to roll out a mammoth software update to all Sky Stream and Sky Glass owners. Dubbed Entertainment OS 1.1, this update brings a number of hotly-anticipated features that Sky confirmed were in development in mid-2022.

Here’s everything new included in Entertainment OS – the operating system that powers Stream and Glass. For those wondering, Sky Q is powered by an older version of Sky’s custom-designed software and is updated on a different schedule. This ageing hardware – the only product still in the Sky TV lineup that requires a satellite dish – might not be able to handle all of the functionality listed below, we’re still waiting on confirmation from Sky.

    Personalised Playlists

Playlists brings together everything you want to watch on Sky Stream or Sky Glass, including on-demand boxsets, recordings from live channels, shows from streamers like Netflix and Disney+, or Hollywood blockbusters. Until now, all household members would contribute to a single Playlist each time they pressed the ‘+’ button on the remote.

With Entertainment OS 1.1, Sky Stream and Sky Glass owners can create up to five unique playlists – one for each member of your household, as well as a playlist for everyone to add things to enjoy together.

For families, it means you can keep all the episodes of Paw Patrol restricted to the kids’ lists, leaving yours free to fill with episodes of The Last of Us, Gangs of London, or Below Deck to watch when the children are asleep.

    New Voice Command

Jumping back into what you want to watch has never been easier as Entertainment OS 1.1 adds the ability to use “Play” as a voice command. So, say “Play Love Island” to resume exactly where you left off in the South African villa or “Play Top Gun: Maverick” to launch the latest blockbuster adventure without navigating to a specific show page, your Playlist, or search results.

Until now, Sky Glass and Sky Stream owners had to search for a specific show, film, or sports fixture before they could select it using their voice.

As a reminder, Sky Glass supports hands-free voice commands so you won’t even need to bother searching for a lost remote control to jump back into the latest episode of your new favourite binge-watch. If you watch using Sky Stream, you’ll still be able to use the new “Play” voice control feature but you’ll need to have your remote to hand and hold the microphone button.

Spotlight On The Cast And Crew

For the first time, Sky will highlight the cast and crew that worked on a particular TV show or film within its menu. If you want to see more from a particular actor, writer, or director, then simply click on thier headshot to see everything available to watch on Sky Glass or Sky Stream from that creator. This is similar to functoinality already available within Apple TV and Prime Video, but it’s great to see it duplicated across the entire Sky TV catalogue.

    Bluetooth Boost

For Sky Glass owners, Entertainment OS 1.1 bolsters Bluetooth connectivity so you can now listen via your Bluetooth headphones at the same time as Sky Glass’ speakers are playing. It means those who are heard of hearing can listen with their headphones, while watching with the rest of their household. This feature is not possible with Sky Stream, since that functionality is handled by your telly – not the box. You’ll need to check with the manufacturer of your TV to see whether this is possible.

    Amazon Music is now available

    January 25, 2023

Amazon Music is now available as a standalone app on Sky Glass and Sky Stream. For those with a subscription to this Spotify rival, you’ll be able to listen to millions of songs and albums via the Dolby Atmos soundbar built into Sky Glass (or whatever sound system you’ve got hooked-up to your Sky Stream box) for the first time.

Amazon Music offers thousands of hand-curated playlists as well as ad-free access to popular podcasts. To give it a go, simply say “Hello Sky, open Amazon Music” to your Sky Glass (if you have hands-free voice control enabled) or say “Amazon Music” into your voice remote on Glass or Stream to launch the app.

For a limited time, you can trial Amazon Music for free for one month.

Sky TV bundles discovery+ subscription at no extra cost

    January 16, 2023

Sky TV customers can now enjoy everything included as part of subscription service discovery+ at no extra cost.

Usually £6.99 per month, this streamer includes access to coverage of sports tournaments including the Australian Open and Roland-Garros, more than 300 days of live cycling – including the Tour de France, and every moment of the Paris Olympic Games next year. Not only that, but Sky TV customers can watch exclusive boxsets, documentaries, and drama series.

This includes docu-series Richard Hammond’s Workshop, award-winning Peter Crouch: Save Our Beautiful Game, and courtroom drama Vardy vs Rooney: The Wagatha Trial, to name just a few. Reality series like Written in the Stars, in which 12 intrepid contestants put their fate in the hands of the world’s top astrologers, plus fan favourites such as 90 Day Fiancé and Beauty and the Geek can be viewed on-demand.

    Sky Stream goes on sale

    October 18, 2022

After months of waiting, Sky Stream became available to order October 18, 2022. There was no preorder period, with the first customers able to schedule next-day delivery to start streaming on the all-new set-top box from October 19, 2022.

Sky originally confirmed plans to offer Sky Stream back in April 2022, although the hardware was originally unveiled alongside Sky Glass back in late 2021.

Sky Stream is shipped to customers with instructions to setup the kit – but there’s no engineer visit or satellite dish installation needed. Instead, it’s simply a case of plugging in the Sky Stream puck, plugging in a HDMI cable into your chosen telly, and connecting to Wi-Fi by following the on-screen guide. And that’s it.

Sky has confirmed that Sky Stream customers will need a minimum download speed of 10Mbps to watch live channels and stream on-demand boxsets. Of course, those who want to watch in the highest quality available – the diddy set-top box supports Ultra HD, HDR and Dolby surround sound – will need more bandwidth than that. It’s possible to have up to six Sky Stream boxes running simultaneously in different rooms of the house for a multi-room experience, although this requires faster broadband too.

For those who live in a home with a clear line-of-sight for a Sky satellite dish or in a block of flats without a communal dish, Sky Stream could be the first time they’re able to get access to exclusive live channels from Sky, on-demand boxsets from HBO, Sky Originals, and US streaming service Peacock.

Sky Stream is available with either an 18-month minimum term contract or a 31-day rolling contract. The latter costs £3 extra each month, but is perfect for those who want to be able to cancel and switch between bundles of channels (Sky Cinema, Sky Sports) at the drop of a hat.

Speaking about the arrival of Sky Stream, Executive Vice President and CEO for UK and Europe Stephen van Rooyen said: “Sky’s always reinvented the TV experience and offered the best content – but it’s not always been accessible to everyone. There couldn’t be a better time to launch our latest innovation using the Sky Glass Platform – whether you want to stream House of the Dragon, Gangs of London or Stranger Things, Sky Stream has it all. It’s the most affordable and easiest way to get Sky TV and Netflix together, offering consumers the value they are seeking right now.”

Cancel anytime during the one-month free trial for Sky Stream and you won’t be charged to watch everything on its 150 exclusive live channels, 500 boxsets like Succession, House of the Dragon, Mare of Easttown, Chernobyl, and complete Netflix subscription. With free next-day delivery, you could be watching on Sky Stream this time tomorrow!

    Sky launches fastest-ever broadband

    April 6, 2022

If you want to ensure you never see any buffering when you start a new boxset on Netflix, download a blockbuster from Sky Cinema, or tune-in to a live channel on Sky Glass… you could benefit from the new Gigafast plan launched by Sky Broadband. The full-fibre package was launched to new and existing Sky customers in early April 2022.

Sky Broadband Gigafast offers download speeds up to 900Mbps – that’s 12x faster than the average home broadband speed in the UK.

To put that eye-watering speed into context, Sky Glass recommends a minimum download speed of 10Mbps to stream on the satellite dish-free telly. With 900Mbps at your fingertips, you’ll be able to watch in pixel-packed 4K Ultra HD, make video calls, back up your photos to the cloud, download software updates, control smart thermostats and video doorbells without the hint of stutter. Even busy households at peak times will struggle to max out that enormous bandwidth.

With download speeds up to 900Mbps, this full-fibre upgrade unlocks the fastest broadband speeds we’ve ever seen from Sky Broadband. If you want to banish buffering, this is the broadband plan for you. Sky Broadband will include a speed guarantee of 600Mbps – or refund you

Available in 24% of UK homes | Download speed: 900Mbps | Upload speed: 90Mbps | Speed guarantee: Yes, 600Mbps minimum | Contract length: 18-months | Upfront cost: £19.95

All-new Sky Glass speaker fascia designs launch

    March 12, 2022

After months of “high demand” for Glass forcing customers to place their names on a waiting list for this custom-designed QLED TV, Sky Glass is finally available to add to your online shopping basket without delay. Since its launch back in October 2021, this all-new telly has been notoriously tough to buy.

Starting from mid-September 2022, the situation seems to be improving, with the ability to order today added across the Sky Store. However, Sky is still warning all customers that low stock might mean you aren’t able to order your first-choice colour option right away. So, it seems some unlucky customers will still be forced to wait. After all, it seems Sky Glass is still experiencing immense demand right now.

One thing is for sure …if you’ve had your eye on this all-in-one television from Sky since it was announced last year, it’s worth placing your order as soon as possible as there’s no guarantee stock will be around for long! Some colours seem to be fairing better than others when it comes to stock levels.

During the checkout process, you can pick between five colours: Anthracite Black, Ocean Blue, Racing Green, Dusky Pink, and Ceramic White. The same five colours are available for the body of the QLED television as well as the speaker fascia. But default, Sky will colour-matched this decorative grill, which covers the components of the Dolby Atmos-certified speaker system built into the chin of the telly, but it’s possible to select any of the four other colours (at an additional cost) to create a more personalised, contrasting look.

Sky recently launched a number of additional colours – Marble, Jade, Onyx, Sapphire, Quartz and Geometric – that are available exclusively via Amazon UK. The satellite company first pledged to introduce new colour options and designs during the Sky Glass launch event last year. These new designs start from £39.99 for the 43-inch Sky Glass model and max-out at £59.99 for a speaker fascia for the largest 65-inch television panel.

If you wished you had created a colour-contrasted look during the checkout process of your initial Sky Glass order, this is a great way to rectify that after-the-fact. Inversely, if you’re now regretting a dramatic clashing look between your shiny new telly and its speaker covering, Sky sells all five original colours via Amazon UK too, so you can get a perfect match between Sky Glass and its speaker fascia.

After months of forcing customers to place their names on a waiting list, Sky has finally opened-up orders to everyone for Sky Glass. But stock levels are dwindling in some of the colourways, so you’ll need to act fast if you want to secure one of these in-demand 4K TVs! Unlike Sky Q, there’s no need to drill a satellite dish onto the side of your house – everything is beamed over Wi-Fi. There’s also integration with Disney+, Netflix, Apple TV+ and Prime Video, as well hands-free voice controls!

Set-up costs: £10 | Contract length: 48-months for Glass, 30-day rolling contract for Sky TV Ultimate bundle

If you want to update the look of your Sky Glass set, or are unhappy with the colour of the speaker fascia that you ordered during the original checkout process – the satellite firm has launched a full range of new colours and geometric patterns to customise the appearance of the QLED TV.

    Deals for existing Sky customers

The Sky TV deals page available on the Sky website here only lists prices for new customers – that’s anyone who doesn’t currently have a Sky TV contract, including those who were previously Sky TV customers and are looking to rejoin. Unfortunately, existing customers might not be able to access the same prices and bundles visible on this page.

However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t any great Sky TV deals available for existing customers.

Logging into your account, Sky will present a number of exclusive deals tailored to you. This could include an upgrade, such as adding optional extras like 4K Ultra HD picture quality, Sky Cinema or Sky Sports to your current package, or switching to the latest Sky Glass hardware from an older set-top box.

Sky VIP – the reward scheme available to all Sky customers – also offers a number of freebies and upgrades, with those who have been with the company for the longest period unlocking the most valuable goodies.

If you’re unhappy with your current monthly bills, it’s worth talking to Sky’s customer service team. It’s possible they’ll match some of the deals currently available to new customers if you’ve been with the company for a while. And if you’re out-of-contract, mentioning that you’re thinking of leaving Sky TV could be a good way to unlock some new discounts… but you didn’t hear that from us, alright?

Does Sky offer Black Friday deals?

Yes, Sky usually takes part in the annual Black Friday deals. These discounts are applied across a wide range of its products, including Sky Glass, Sky Stream, and fibre broadband packages. All of these Black Friday deals are available to new customers only. Existing customers who want to renegotiate their deal will need to call the Sky helpline on 03337590879.

That said, Black Friday doesn’t always offer the lowest ever pricing on Sky Glass, Sky Stream, or Sky broadband. So don’t wait for months until the latest Black Friday promotions come around as you might miss out on a much better deal available right now.

How Sky TV customers can cut their monthly bills

When you sign-up for any of the deals currently on offer from Sky, there’s a minimum term for the contract. Usually set at 18-months, this is the period in which you’ll have to stick with the bundle that you added to your shopping basket on the day you signed-up.

However, as soon as that period is over, you’ll be out-of-contract and able to renegotiate a new contract with Sky TV, continue paying each month without committing to a new minimum contract term (you’ll usually find the monthly bills are quite a bit higher in this scenario), or leave Sky TV for another provider.

Under the current Ofcom rules, Sky must alert you when you’re nearing the end of your current contract and have the above options open to you. It’s at this stage in your contract when you’ll be able to drop select channels or extras from your TV package – like Sky Cinema, for example – to lower your monthly bills. You might also be able to sign-up for a new deal (with another 18-month minimum contract term) to secure a discount or new extras for the same monthly cost.

If you’re pretty set on leaving …or at the very least, reducing the amount you pay each month, it’s extremely likely that Sky will fight hard for your custom. Anecdotally, Sky customers regularly recount securing massive discounts and sweetheart deals when attempting to reduce the size of their telly package. After all, Sky will really want to keep existing customers like you …it doesn’t want to boost the subscriber count at rival Virgin Media. Of course, nothing is guaranteed.

Existing Sky TV customers can talk to a customer service representative by calling 03337591018.

Worse case scenario, if you walk away from your Sky TV deal at the end of your current contract, wait a month or two, you’ll be eligible to apply for the best Sky TV deals available to new customers all over again. And that is guaranteed to reduce the overall cost of your Sky TV package.

Can existing Sky TV customers get the same deals as new Sky users?

If you’re already signed-up with Sky TV, you’ll need to login to your account or ring the customer service helpline to discuss the deals available to you. Admittedly, there is a strong resemblance between the latest slew of existing customer deals and the new customer packages being advertised by Sky TV on its website. However, any free gifts used to tempt new customers are often dropped from the promotions available to existing Sky TV customers.

It’s worth noting that existing Sky TV customers will save money on set-up fees, delivery, and won’t need to wait for an engineer to get everything up-and-running (this only applies to Sky Q, with Sky Glass and Sky Stream easy enough that customers can set-up everything themselves to save time and money) since you’re only haggling over price. That’s one advantage that new Sky customers can’t match.

Can you watch Sky TV for free?

Yes! For a limited time, Sky Stream is available for free for one month. If you cancel at any point during that 30-day period, you won’t be charged anything.

Sky Stream arrives with 150 live channels in 1080p HD (at no extra cost, unlike Sky Q), 500 on-demand boxsets from HBO Max, Peacock, discovery+ and Sky Originals, and a Netflix subscription. Next-day delivery is bundled at no cost and Sky has waived the upfront cost.

Sign-up now for free, and you’ll be able to watch for the rest of the month without spending a penny.

If you want to keep the set-top box, Stream starts from £29 per month. Or you could switch to a limited time offer from NOW (formerly NOW TV) to keep watching the latest episodes of exclusive Sky TV shows, like The Last Of Us, Succession, and The White Lotus at a reduced cost!

Sky TV vs NOW: What’s the difference?

Sky-owned NOW, formerly known as NOW TV, unlocks access to many of the same shows and movies as Sky Q and Sky Glass. You’ll be able to watch all of the same exclusive US boxsets, including award-winning series like Succession, Mare Of Easttown, and Euphoria, as well as Sky-produced originals, like Landscapers with Olivia Colman and David Thewlis, and Brassic with Michelle Keegan.

Many of these shows are only available via Sky Atlantic, which isn’t even available to those who pay extra to add Sky channels (like Sky Comedy, Sky History, and Sky Crime) to their Virgin TV 360 set-top box. It’s only available to watch via Sky Q, Sky Glass, and NOW.

So, what is the difference? Well, NOW is contract-free, so you won’t need to worry about any minimum contract terms.

Instead, like Netflix and Disney+, you’ll pay for access to the service each month via direct debit and can cancel and walk away at any time. Better yet, you can switch between the NOW Memberships available at any time. So, if you’ve finished bingeing a must-watch series and want to watch a few movies instead, you can switch from the Entertainment bundle to Sky Cinema for a month. Then, switch back whenever you want.

NOW is the perfect solution for anyone who needs that extra flexibility. But if you’re looking for the best way to watch all of the latest-and-greatest shows, movies and sports… you’d be better looking at Sky Q or Sky Glass. While the latter options support picture quality up to 4K Ultra HD, you’ll need to pay extra to get 1080p HD from NOW. Not only that, you can’t replicate features like Series Link, which automatically records new additions to a series whenever episodes air.

Voice controls are supported on both Sky Q, Sky Glass and NOW …although only Glass supports hands-free commands. If you’re watching NOW via an Apple TV or Fire TV, you’ll have access to the same streaming services already available on Sky’s own set-top boxes, including the likes of Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, BBC iPlayer and more. However, unless you’re subscribed to Sky Q or Sky Glass, you’re not going to be able to bundle all of these subscriptions into a single monthly payment.

Does Sky offer discounts for pensioners?

Unfortunately, neither Sky TV nor its contract-free sister brand, NOW (formerly NOW TV), currently offers a special discount for pensioners. So, those hoping to secure a discount will be left disappointed. However, Sky offers a number of promotions throughout the year, so older viewers will likely be able to claim a discount in the sales, which will last the duration of the minimum term of their contract, which is usually 18-months or so.

But while there isn’t a specific savings scheme for pensioners with Sky TV, the satellite telly firm does offer a number of extra provisions to help older customers. On a help page, Sky advises “We’ve a range of support tools for customers who, for example, are elderly and need a little extra help, or who have particular accessibility needs (visual, hearing, cognitive or motor impairment)”. It also has a dedicated page to support those who are struggling to pay their bills.

“Managing a budget can be hard at the best of times and, when circumstances change, paying bills on time might be difficult. If your payment’s late, we’ll send you reminders and give you another chance to pay us. We’ll also add other safeguards to protect your interests. If a debt’s left unpaid and is passed on to one of our debt collection agencies, they’ll work with you to agree a fair and affordable repayment plan,” it advises. “Please let us know if you have trouble paying so we can help you. We understandably see our customers turning to family or friends to help them manage their affairs but, whether you’re supporting someone else or need support yourself, it’s best to act sooner rather than later.”

“And if you’re also struggling to pay other bills because, for example, your income’s been lowered or you’ve taken on some unexpected costs, it’s always better to act as soon as you can to avoid falling further into debt. And whatever you need to do, we’re here to help.”
