Brazil Orders Apple to Include Power Adaptors for iPhone 12 Sales

Apple recently released its new iPhone 12 and for the first time in the company’s history decided not to include a power adaptor in the package, citing environmental reasons for the change. Despite its claimed rationale, the Brazilian government is not convinced, and has now ordered to tech giant to include chargers for all iPhone 12 sales within the state of São Paulo.

According to reports, the state government questioned Apple as to the real environmental benefits of not including a power adaptor, and required the company to prove that its omission would not harm consumers. Apple responded by arguing that most consumers had already owned chargers, and that not including new ones in the iPhone 12 package would reduce carbon emissions. However, the Brazilian government remained unimpressed with the answer, and considered the power adaptor to be an essential component to use the phone, so sales without it would contravene the Brazilian Consumer Defense Code.

In light of the decision, the state of São Paulo is now requiring Apple to sell iPhone 12 models with power adaptors included, failure of which will lead to a fine. At the same time, Brazil will be looking at adopting this decision nationwide.
