Brit hit with nightmare £20000 bill from O2 after his phone was stolen abroad

An unfortunate Brit has been hit with a hefty bill from O2 after his phone was stolen on holiday.

The man, who has not shared his name, took to Reddit to share an image of a bill from O2 for £20,973.06 which he says was issued after he had his phone stolen while abroad.

The bill shows charges of £17,444.49 for calls with VAT of £3,495.51 slapped on top.

The man said he reported his phone stolen to O2 within 8 hours but thieves were still able to 'make over 800 phone calls to premium rate numbers' and rinse his allowance.

He said last week that he has been on the phone with O2 for 'the best part of 4 days' and has been 'passed around from one department to another'.

One Reddit user said: "Worked for a mobile network for 13 years. You won't have to pay it. Just keep on at them. I've dealt with this many times."

Another worker for a mobile network told the man to file a complaint with O2 and go to the Communication Ombudsman if there are any issues.

They advised: "Most, if not all networks have a clause where if you report it stolen within 24 hours you don't have to pay any charges, 24-72 hours only 25% charges, etc. If that is the case I don't know how successful you will be, but it's definitely worth a go."

After the man said he would 'harass the ever living sh*t out of O2' until they sort it out, another commenter wrote: "The fact that you have to make such a fuss about it to not be financially crippled by this huge debt that really isn't your fault boils my p**s."

O2's website states that customers must report their phones as stolen as soon as possible so the SIM card can be blocked.

It says: "You must report a theft or lost phone immediately, as you're responsible for the cost of any calls, texts and data transfers made until it's blocked."
