You’d think that one of the most famous guys in the world would have holiday gifting season on lock, but Chris Hemsworth is just like you. He gets stressed out about giving gifts. “It gets harder and harder to buy for people,” says Thor himself, who surprisingly doesn’t have some sort of Asgardian secret to figuring it all out.
Still, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have his own way of doing things. Men’s Health recently sat down with the actor and fitness entrepreneur to share his top holiday gift ideas and what he’s gifting his loved ones this season.
Outdoor Gifts are a Great Idea
“I prefer to give something activity based,” says Hemsworth. “The best thing I ever received as a kid was a surfboard from my dad. It got me into surfing and it’s now become an obsession with me, my friends, my kids, and my family. Everything I do is based around the ocean.” He’s carried on the tradition with his own kids. “I got my kids PeeWee 50s motorbikes, which they’re now obsessed with. It’s a little scary. I was like, ‘this is a recipe for disaster,’ but they just love them.”
Experiences are Best
“My mom is all about experiences, so last Christmas I took her and her friends to Europe. That was really special. She and her friends still talk about it,” says the actor. And while not everyone can do a European vacation, he says you don’t have to go over the top to give a good experiential gift. “It’s about memories and doing things together. You don’t sit around at dinner talking about things you were given, you talk about experiences you’ve had.”
Books are the Perfect Gift for Anyone
Realistically, you can’t take everyone on your list on a vacation or even out to dinner. In that case, Hemsworth says “a good book is universal, especially if it’s something you’ve read. There’s a conversation behind it.” This year, he’s planning on giving The Second Mountain by David Brooks (“it’s fantastic”), Everything Is F*cked by Mark Manson (“It’s a book about hope.”), and The World’s Fittest Book by Ross Edgley. “He’s known as one of the fittest people on Earth,” says Hemsworth, who arguably is another one of those people. “It’s about universal collaboration, a mixture of training methods, and how to apply that to your lifestyle.”
You Can Give Cologne, As Long As It’s Good
Cologne is a good go-to gift for any guy, but giving it can be tricky. Instead of trying to guess someone’s taste, Hemsworth suggests going for one that’s easy to wear for everyone, like BOSS Bottled Absolute, not only because he’s the face. The deep, rich scent has a dose of cinnamon and musk which is perfect for the holiday gift-giving season. “It’s versatile and not overpowering, but there’s still a sophistication to it,” he says.
