‘Concorde Junior’ will be world’s fastest jet and cross Atlantic in 3.5 hours

We could see the return of supersonic Concorde-style flights thanks to a new high-speed jet.

The 'Overture' is a supersonic plane with four engines being constructed by the aviation company Boom Supersonic.

Revealed at this year's Farnborough Airshow, the craft boasts flying speeds of Mach 1.7 over water, which would get you from London to New York in 3.5 hours.

It would mark the first time supersonic travel has become available to the public again ever since Concorde wrapped up operations back in 2003.

Blake Scholl, founder and CEO of Boom Supersonic, said: "Aviation has not seen a giant leap in decades. Overtue is revolutionary in its design, and it will fundamentally change how we think about distance.

"With more than 600 routes across the globe, Overture will make the world dramatically more accessible for tens of millions of passengers."

He added that the speed of the plane could make it useful in 'high consequence scenarios' such as emergency evacuations or disaster responses.

Although the speed of the flight is impressive, it's unclear how damaging regular supersonic flights could be for the environment.

Private jets have seen growing criticism ever since it was revealed that Kylie Jenner takes 17-minute trips in her own plush aeroplane.

While the return of supersonic flight is exciting, the Overture could soon be blown out of the water as the race to develop 'hypersonic' aircraft heats up.

Earlier this year, a Chinese company revealed it is working on a hypersonic plane that could get you from London to Australia in a hour by flying at breakneck speeds of 7000mph.

Space Transportation's craft has its first tests planned for next year, which will see it fly to the edge of space and touch back down on Earth almost as quickly.
