Ever since the launch of the Donkey Kong arcade machine in July 1981, Mario has needed no introduction.

Nintendo's agile Italian plumber is one of the most iconic videogame characters of all time, spawning not only more than 200 video games but the entire Nintendo empire.

Not all of the Mario games have been a hit, and the 1993 Hollywood adaptation starring Bob Hoskins is widely regarded as one of the worst films of all time.

So when Nintendo announced Chris Pratt would be heading up a star-studded film adaptation of the series, Mario fans were more than a little concerned.

Now slated for a 2023 release, the film is set to finally give Mario the silver screen treatment it deserves. Here's everything we know so far.

Will the Mario movie be live action?

Unlike the disastrous 1993 adaptation, the new Mario movie will be entirely CGI-animated. Heading up the creation of the film is Illumination Studios Paris, the animators behind Despicable Me, Minions, and The Lorax.

According to leaks, the film's animation style is 'cartoonish and full of life and colour' and is packed full of puns and humour.

This approach will likely align the film's aesthetic much more closely with the games and avoid any poor quality misinterpretations of the series' characters, such as the 'Goombas' in 1993.

What is cast of the new Mario movie?

The Mario movie hit the headlines when its A-list cast was revealed late last year. It includes:

  • Chris Pratt as Mario
  • Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach
  • Charlie Day as Luigi
  • Charles Martinet as Wario
  • Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong
  • Jack Black as Bowser
  • Keegan Michael Key as Toad
  • Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek
  • Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong

It's not clear how faithful the film will be to the original source material. Last month, Chris Pratt told Variety that his voice acting will be 'unlike anything you've heard in the Mario world before', which suggests he's unlikely to be doing a fake Italian accent.

Pratt said: "It's an animated voiceover narrative. It's not a live-action movie. I'm not gonna be wearing a plumber suit running all over. I'm providing a voice for an animated character, and it is updated and unlike anything you've heard in the Mario world before."

What is the plot of the new Mario movie?

According to a Reddit post claiming to share leaked plot details, the Mario film is set at a time when Mario is already 'famous'.

While investigating some bad business in the sewers, Mario bumps into Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen) and the pair fall through a pipe into the Mushroom Kingdom, where they meet Princess Peach who is swiftly kidnapped by Bowser.

The so-called 'leaks' were removed from Reddit after a copyright claim, but if they're true, it looks like the film will feature many of the game series' iconic characters and settings.
