Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram down live including what’s wrong

Social media giants Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp are down in a global outage that has got the planet literally talking.

The social media giant – who runs all the apps – said it is working on restoring the services after being hit by one of its longest outages.

The disruption, which hit Facebook's platforms at around 4.55pm British time, comes a day after a whistleblower accused the firm of repeatedly prioritising profit over clamping down on hate speech and misinformation.

What exactly has happened to Facebook is more likely to be human error than a 'hack' although it hasn't stopped the conspiracy theories swirling.

Security experts tracking the situation said the outage likely was triggered by a configuration error that left directions to Facebook servers unavailable.

Why it’s down – from an expert!

Adam Leon Smith, of BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT and a software testing expert, said: "The outage is caused by changes made to the Facebook network infrastructure.

"Many of the recent high-profile outages have been caused by similar network level events.

"It is reported by unidentified Facebook sources on Reddit that the network changes have also prevented engineers from remotely connecting to resolve the issues, delaying resolution.

"Notably, many organisations now define their physical infrastructure as code, but most do not apply the same level of testing rigour when they change that code, as they would when changing their core business logic."

At least some people can have a laugh…

Not a great day for Facebook

It doesn't rain, it pours.

Earlier today in the US of A, Democratic Senator Ed Markey on Monday asked for answers from Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg after new research suggested the social media company failed to prevent display of harmful advertisements to teen Facebook users.

The Facebook executive told Congress last week that the site does not allow weight-loss ads to be shown to people under the age of 18 already, or any tobacco ads.

Markey said "new research shows Facebook allowed advertisers to target with exactly these types of inappropriate and dangerous content to teen users."

Facebook did not immediately comment.

Hide under a pile of coats and hope that everything works out Mark…

So what happened in previous outages then?

It is not the first time Facebook-owned platforms have been affected by an outage – a similar incident occurred over two years ago, on April 14, 2019.
The hashtags #FacebookDown, #instagramdown and #whatsappdown were all trending worldwide on Twitter.

Many people ended up joking that they were relieved at least one popular social media platform was still working – in a similar way to what occurred on Monday evening.

A spokesman for Facebook at the time said: "Earlier today, some people may have experienced trouble connecting to the family of apps.

"The issue has since been resolved; we're sorry for any inconvenience."

So whose fault is it?

Well, according to friend of the stars Omid Scobie, it won't be long before a two certain people get fingered for this…

WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook have been down for more than three hours – with users across the globe experiencing issues on the social media platforms.

The platforms confirmed on Twitter they are aware of issues and are working to resolve them – but all three remained down at 10pm on Monday.

No one knows for sure but the companies saying they are "working as quickly as possible".

Meanwhile, one person tweeted: "Maybe Whatsapp, Facebook and Instagram all going down at once is a good wake-up call that one company should not have THIS much power and control and influence over all of us, right?"

Facebook down conspiracy and hack theories

Facebook has suffered a major worldwide outage tonight with no signs on the social media platform springing back into life.

The extent of the problem is so severe that even Facebook employees are reportedly unable to access buildings as their passes don't work.

WhatsApp and Instagram are also down.

What has happened to Facebook is not known, but it's more likely to be human error than a 'hack' although it hasn't stopped the conspiracy theories swirling.

Mike Sington said: "Facebook, as well as WhatsApp and Instagram owned by Facebook, are all down.

Why Facebook is down and it’s more likely to be human error than a ‘hack’

Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp are down across the globe – but a hack of the system appears 'unlikely'.

In technical terms, Facebook was inaccessible because users were not being directed to the correct place by the Domain Name System (DNS).

However Facebook itself controls the relevant settings.

DNS allows web addresses to take users to their destinations and a similar outage at cloud company Akamai Technologies Inc took down multiple websites in July.

Security experts tracking the situation said the outage likely was triggered by a configuration error that left directions to Facebook servers unavailable.
