iPhone and iPad users have just been given a massive privacy upgrade by Apple—and it doesn't cost a penny.
The iOS 16.3 update adds a ton of security features, but the best one of all can encrypt most of your iCloud data including photos, videos, and files.
The feature, called Advanced Data Protection, is designed to encrypt your iCloud photos and videos from end-to-end.

It works in a similar way to WhatsApp, meaning that portions of your data is completely encrypted between you and any other devices you use iCloud on.
The feature is so secure that even Apple can't access the data protected by it, with the added benefit that it's much harder for both hackers and the government to request info on your private data.
Advanced Data Protection will provide fully end-to-end encryption for:
- iCloud Drive and Cloud Backup
- Photos
- Notes
- Reminders
- Safari
- Maps
- Screen Time
- Passwords and Keychain
- iCloud messages
- Wi-Fi passwords
- and more
It means that if the police, for example, asked Apple to access your photos, they wouldn't be able to. Similarly, if a hacker broke into Apple's systems, they wouldn't be able to see your files either.

To activate Advanced Data Protection, you need the iOS 16.3 update installed on your iPhone or iPad. You can do this via the Settings app on your device.
Then, go to Settings > iCloud > Advanced Data Protection.
First, you need to follow the steps onscreen to enable Account Recovery. This is because if you lose access to your device or iCloud for whatever reason, the encryption will mean nobody can access it without recovery features.
After that, you can enable Advanced Data Protection easily—and enjoy much better privacy than before.
