Harry Potter ‘Hogwarts Mystery’ launches today – it could be the new Pokemon Go

A new Harry Potter game has launched on iPhones and Android devices today, with the potential to challenge the likes of Pokemon Go in the world of smartphone gaming.

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery lets players create their own characters and enroll at the famous wizarding school.

The game involves choosing their favourite house and attending classes – like Potions with Professor Snape – and is set in the 1980s, long before Harry himself arrived at the school.

As well as the day-to-day gameplay rigours of wizard school, players must unlock the secret of why their character’s older brother was expelled from Hogwarts.

Gameplay involves wandering around the school and interacting with items – occasionally performing spells by waving your phone around like a wand.

Although the game is free, it does support in-app payments which can hamper the gameplay. In order to recharge your character’s energy and tackle challenges, you have to obtain an Energy Gem by waiting in real-time (3 minutes and 20 seconds) or pay up real money to get it faster.

Fans of the series will note that some of the actors from the films have provided their voices for the game. Michael Gambon, Dame Maggie Smith and Warwick Davis all reprise their big screen roles as Dumbledore, McGonagall and Flitwick.

“The story of Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is set in the 1980s,” developer Jam City said in a press release.

“In the game, players will progress as a student through Hogwarts, joining one of its four houses.

"Players will be able to create and upgrade personalized characters using an avatar customization system, learn an arsenal of magical skills, and form relationships with other students.”

You can download the game for Android devices here or for Apple iOS devices here .
