Immortality possible this year if we ‘upload’ ourselves online, says scientist

You should start making as many audio and video recordings of your loved ones as possible so that they can achieve digital immortality, a computer scientist has urged.

Silicon Valley tech founder Dr Pratik Desai has made the somewhat bold claim that we'll be able to upload dead people's consciousnesses to computers by the end of 2023.

He's told people to start making recordings of their relatives and loved ones as soon as possible as he thinks there's a '100 percent chance that they will live with you forever'.

Dr Desai believes that, with enough data, AI will make it possible to achieve digital immortality sooner than we think.

In a tweet, Dr Desai said: "Start regularly recording your parents, elders and loved ones. With enough transcript data, new voice synthesis and video models, there is a 100% chance that they will live with you forever after leaving physical body. This should even be possible by end of the year."

His claims are based on the idea that making detailed digital copies of a person's likeness could enable you to train an AI to act just like them.

This could be somewhat possible thanks to technologies like ChatGPT, but is a thorny issue especially for people grieving.

The idea of mind uploading has long been the work of science fiction among theorists who think we'll be able to live forever on the Internet outside of our physical bodies.

It would involve creating a 'copy' of the brain and storing all the information on it, then allowing it to live in a virtual world or inside a computer.

However, it's unclear whether such a technology could ever truly lead to the creation of 'conscious' digital beings—or a digital clone that's just a pale imitation of the person you once knew and loved.
