Apple iPhone and Android users that want to extend their phone’s battery life for as long as possible need to know some handy tricks they can try out today. With the new iPhone 14 Pro, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 all coming out recently, many people across the UK will be getting a shiny new smartphone delivered to their doorsteps soon. And if you want to get as much use as possible out of your new Android device or iPhone before you have to plug it into the mains to charge there are some simple tips you can take advantage of right now.
If you’re finding you’re struggling to reach the end of the day before you have to charge your smartphone there are some simple things you try out today to make a single charge last as long as possible.
Express.co.uk has rounded up these handy tricks below which will help extend the battery life of your Android or Apple smartphone…
Enable Low Power or Battery Saver mode
Both Android and iOS have modes you can quickly toggle on to help make a charge last as long as possible.
For the iPhone this is Low Power Mode while the Android equivalent is Battery Saver Mode.
These modes help make your phone’s battery last for significantly longer by limiting certain features such as app refresh and 5G usage.
If you want to make your battery last as long as possible this is an obvious setting to turn on, but there are other things you can do to help make your phone’s juice last longer.
Turn down the brightness
If you have your brightness up to full whack each and every day this can significantly eat into your battery life.
In fact, the amount of time your screen is on and active plays a huge part in how quickly your battery drains, as the screen is the part of your phone that uses the most amount of energy.
Turning the brightness right down will help make your battery last longer, but the flipside is it can make it difficult to see what is going on the screen at first.
This will likely be a big shock to you at first, but it’s – hopefully – something you’ll be able to get used to.
Also, changing the settings so your phone goes to sleep after a shorter amount of inactivity will also help reduce power usage.
Airplane Mode is your friend
Airplane Mode – as the name suggests – is a setting designed to limit features when you get onboard a flight.
This is obviously crucial to help prevent your phone from interfering with any communications a plane needs, but it can also help with keeping your battery usage down.
In Airplane Mode many settings will be disabled, such as the ability to access 4G and 5G as well as turning off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.
For some people, they wouldn’t dream of turning Airplane Mode on in their day to day lives as it stops you from accessing the most used features of your smartphone.

But it can come in handy in certain situations. If you’re out and about and see you only have a little bit of charge left, and don’t know when you’ll be able to top up the amount of juice you have, then you can turn on Airplane Mode to make your battery last as long as possible till you get home.
Also, if you use your phone as an alarm then Airplane Mode can help ensure leaving it on while you sleep doesn’t eat away at your battery too much.
Of course, this means you wouldn’t be able to receive any calls or texts that come in overnight, so you have to decide if that’s something you’d personally be happy with.
Whether you decide to use Airplane Mode often to help make your battery last longer will depend on your own day to day use of your smartphone.
But it’s a handy tool to have in your armoury if you are looking for ways to make a single charge last as long as possible.
