iPhone camera can now tell you if a spider in your house is deadly or venomous

A free new iPhone feature lets you identify exactly how dangerous a spider in your house is, thanks to Apple's powerful AI search tools.

iOS 16's 'visual lookup' tool is built into your iPhone camera and can be used to automatically identify a spider or other insect.

It's the perfect tool for your home as we enter peak spider mating season, with many of the creepy-crawlies making their way inside our houses and flats.

All you have to do is take a photograph of your eight-legged home invader and Apple's machine learning algorithm will do the rest.

Just open the image in your Photos app and tap the little 'i' icon with two small stars in its top-left corner.

You'll be given plenty of relevant information in a summary about the spider or insect in question.l This will usually come from Wikipedia but it could also generate information from other sources.

All of this should help you decide whether to humanely release the spider outside using a glass jar—or despatch it quickly with the whack of a broom.

Visual Lookup is a powerful new tool for iPhones introduced as part of this month's iOS 16 update.

It's not only useful for identifying insects, animals, and objects. It also lets you make 'cut-outs' of photos or graphics to use in your own memes or custom images.

That means you can make fun memes to take the mick out of your friends, or easily edit yourself into an image.

iOS 16 is one of the biggest free iPhone upgrades of recent years, giving users the option to fully customise their lock screens and much more. Check out our full guide to iOS 16 to find out how you can get it
