When you first get an iPhone or new smartphone, it's easy to become trigger happy with the App Store.
Over the years, you might have downloaded dozens of apps which you don't even use anymore, but still sit quietly on your device.
These unused apps don't only take up storage space—they also have permission to access some of the most essential parts of your smartphone, including the camera and microphone.

While Apple generally has a great track record in terms of privacy, there are still a few sneaky apps which fall through the net and could be quietly listening in on you.
Thankfully it's really easy to find out which apps have permission to access your microphone.
All you have to do is open the Settings app on the iPhone and tap Privacy then Microphone.
You'll be able to see every single app that has access to your microphone and even enable or disable it individually for each app.
If there's anything you don't recognise, it might be a good idea to uninstall it completely for extra security.

It's not only third party apps you have to worry about when it comes to iPhone eavesdropping.
The iPhone's 'Live Listen' feature lets any iPhone user listen to a live audio feed through their AirPods via the device's microphone.
It's designed to help those with hearing difficulties but it means people can hide their iPhones somewhere in a room and then listen in from afar, effectively creating the perfect spying device.
When the feature first launched, Apple said: "With Live Listen, your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch can act as a microphone that sends sounds to your AirPods, Airpods Pro, AirPods Max, Powerbeats Pro or Beats Fit Pro.
"Live Listen can help you hear a conversation in a noisy area or even hear someone speaking across the room."
