Love Island 2022: Which phone do the islanders use?

It’s well known that any contestant entering the Love Island villa has to surrender their personal phone before stepping through the door.

Instead, they’re given a dedicated Love Island phone that prevents them from scrolling Instagram or checking up on news from the outside world.

It’s also a way for the show’s producers to contact them about dates, recouplings and other show-related announcements.

Finally, the islanders can use the gadgets to snap sexy selfies and pictures of their fellow contestants.

And while Love Island has traditonally had a strong partnership with South Korean manufacturer Samsung for the last few seasons, it’s all changed for 2022.

This year, the Love Island gang are all using Google Pixel 6 Pro smartphones. Which are recognisable thanks to the distinctive black band across the back that houses the phone’s camera system.

And despite the phones reportedly being locked down (special software installed on them means they can’t make calls or texts to the outside world, or connect to villa Wi-Fi) there’s a lot of impressive tech hiding inside the Google Pixel 6 Pro.

The aforementioned camera system includes a 50-megapixel main sensor behind a f/1.85 aperture lens with optical image stabilisation. Right next to it is a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera with a f/2.2 lens and a 114-degree field of view. And finally, a 4x telephoto lens for getting those zoom shots.

Google has equipped the Pixel 6 Pro with its own Tensor processor, which powers a lot of computational photography and photo editing tools.

The ‘Magic Eraser’ mode lets you casually remove things from your photos – like photobombers in the background or unwanted objects – like a housemate that’s also an ex.

There’s also a ‘Motion Mode’ that mimics the long exposure settings on traditional cameras that turn rivers into wispy pathways of water and car headlights into unbroken streams of light on a dark road.

So while we don’t know if the islanders get to keep their phones or not once they leave the villa, the high-tech Google gadget could be enough to turn their heads when they’re shopping for their next upgrade.
