New WhatsApp feature lets you know when people are talking about you in chats

Most of us are probably part of countless WhatsApp groups – some important and others not so much. Have you ever wondered what people are saying about you in these WhatsApp chats?

WhatsApp is apparently working on a new feature that could keep you in the loop. Now, if you're hoping to know what people are saying behind your back, we're unfortunately not quite at that level yet with features.

But, the new WhatsApp feature that tech giants Meta are working on is just as useful. Here's what you need to know about the new feature on the popular messaging app.

What is the new WhatsApp feature that lets you know when people are talking about you?

The new feature could let you know whenever you've been mentioned in chats you're a part of.

What this does is make notifications more useful and easier to manage, because you'll have a better idea of who has mentioned you or replied to you within groups.

Previously, you would get a text-only alert when someone messaged you. Now, the person's profile photo will appear in the notification. This small tweak gives users a quick update of who's talking to – or about – them.

This change is part of a wider new feature that has been designed specifically to make notifications a bit more informative.

The feature is currently in testing and only revealed to beta testers on iOS 15. There is no information yet on whether it will even be available on Android.

What are other features have been introduced to WhatsApp?

WhatsApp has already made several changes in recent months. In December, it introduced a much-requested feature that let users preview voice messages.

It also launched the self-destruction timers for all your chats, allowing users to have all texts automatically deleted after a chosen period of time.

There is no confirmation on when the new profile photo feature and other notification related features may launch, but if it happens soon, it could end up being the first change to come to the app in 2022.

Some other features likely to be introduced this include:

  • Hiding 'last seen' status from specific contacts – users can hide their last seen details from specific contacts, while still be able to see the ‘last seen’ status of all the other people in their contacts
  • WhatsApp Community feature – which is said to be similar to discord groups and channels where admins will be able to create up to 10 groups inside a community and send messages to all the groups at once
  • Message reactions – the feature is similar to one that exists on Facebook and Instagram, letting user react to a message using a total of six emojis
  • Instagram reels for WhatsApp – the new feature will let people watch Instagram Reels straight from the messaging app
