If your mobile phone is connected to O2 or Vodafone, then your signal could be set for a major boost. That’s because these two rival firms have just announced a new partnership that will see them share their infrastructure in a bid to help users get a more seamless experience.

Vodafone and O2 already use each other’s phone masts, but now these mobile carriers hope to seamlessly switch between their 5G spectrums as well in a bid to bring the best reliability and speeds to its huge user base.

If you didn’t already know, 5G is the next generation of mobile signal and can whizz downloads to devices at speeds in excess of 300Mbps – that speed makes 5G around five times faster than the average UK broadband.

5G is also able to cope with more devices connected at once, making it the ideal solution for when we all return to busy train stations or packed stadiums. O2 and Vodafone say its partnership will improve coverage for customers – both indoor and outdoor – across urban, suburban and rural areas.

Vodafone encourage customers to ‘keep connecting’

They will also be able to support faster speeds, lower latency, plus offer more efficient and greener 5G services. The move is subject to approval from Ofcom but could benefit anyone who buys a new device, such as the iPhone 12 or Galaxy S21, which is 5G-enabled.

Speaking about the new Mark Evans, CEO of O2, said, “This year O2 is investing more than ever in its network to improve coverage and experience. Securing contiguous blocks of spectrum is crucial to harnessing the true power of 5G – we will have the strongest indoor and outdoor connectivity and an ultra-reliable frequency.

“O2 is a champion for coverage and reliability, and remains committed to responsibly and securely improving the network experience for all our customers across the UK. This deal with Vodafone is further evidence of our commitment to customers and we’re hugely excited about the possibilities of our 5G network.”

And Ahmed Essam, CEO of Vodafone UK added, “We have invested in our network to deliver brilliant coverage for both calls and data, where and when our customers need it.

“The result of this auction and our agreement with O2 will help us continue our mission of connecting our customers for a better future. It means we have the best possible spectrum to continue giving our customers a fast and reliable 5G service.”
