OnePlus announces some monumental changes amid COVID-19 outbreak – how it affects YOU

Technology companies across the globe are racing to adapt to the strict quarantine measures in place to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus pandemic, which has already infected some 750,000 people worldwide and resulted in over 35,000 deaths. Apple has shuttered all of its brick-and-mortar retail stores outside of Greater China, relying instead on home deliveries and collections for repairs or trade-ins. Google has cancelled its annual Google IO developer conference entirely – leaving the Pixel 4a without a release date. And now OnePlus has unveiled the measures it will be implementing.

The Shenzhen-based company has extended its return policies and warranty periods amid the uncertainty.

That means any OnePlus models with a warranty due to expire between March 1 and May 30, 2020 will now be extended to May 31, 2020. Given the vast financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic on many households, that extra time could be hugely important if your smartphone breaks.

It also means you’ll have more time to organise a repair or replacement for the handset remotely – something that isn’t always possible in countries with strict social distancing policies, like those in being enforced in the UK right now.

And OnePlus hasn’t stopped there. The company, which will announce its next flagship smartphone – the OnePlus 8 – during an event live-streamed to fans across the globe on April 14, 2020, is also extending return periods.

Under normal circumstances, returns to OnePlus are possible in the first 15 days after delivery from the firm. However, OnePlus has now extended that to the following 30 days. It is also providing free shipping for customers in both directions on all returns, replacements, and repairs.

And the generosity doesn’t stop there. OnePlus understands that sending back faulty phones, repairing the smartphone and getting it back in your hands might take a little longer than expected at the moment – so it is working on a new “back-up device” scheme. This will offer up a loan smartphone to customers while their phone is in for repair. However, this will be limited to Europe and North America at launch.

The extraordinary measures were announced in a post on the OnePlus forum.

It confirmed: “We are also working on a back-up device program that will allow you to stay connected with your loved ones if your phone is out for repair. Initially, the back-up device program will be in the pilot stage available for Europe and North America with limited stock, however, we will do our best to support you.”
