Russian officials may want to lay off the comic books, after reportedly claiming Ukraine is creating super soldiers in a lab.
Apparently, these ‘secret experiments’ are testing ‘performance enhancing drugs’ on Ukranian troops.
A report on Russian state media site Kommersant says these drugs ‘completely neutralize the last traces of human consciousness and turn them into the most cruel and deadly monsters.’
That quote comes from Irina Yarovaya, deputy chair of the State Duma – which is the lower house of the Federal Assembly of Russia.
Just to hammer home the point, she added: ‘this system for the control and creation of a cruel murder machine was implemented under the management of the United States.’
Even for Russia, this seems like quite a stretch.
But, like so much else coming from the country, it has its groundings in social media misinformation.
The conspiracy theory that Ukraine was hiding ‘biolaboratories’ containing super soldier experiments began circulating on Twitter in March. Evidently, the Russians came across the idea and decided to run with it.
Now these claims appearing in Russian media are likely calculated to add justification as the conflic continues to dominate Europe.
Konstantin Kosachev, the deputy speaker of Russia’s Federation Council, joined Yarovaya in claiming Putin’s government had ‘evidence’ of these biolabs.
Meanwhile, the troops on the ground have been ordered to intensify their efforts to invade Ukraine.
The seizure of the town of Lysychansk at the beginning of July secured the Kremlin’s control over the Luhansk region, which comprises half the south-eastern region.
Russia is redoubling attacks in the disputed Donbas region and attempting to solidify control over new territory along its border with Ukraine.
Despite this, Ukraine is showing signs of recapturing land taken by the Russians and fighting back against the invasion.
