Setting up new iPhones or iPads ‘impossible’ after Christmas for this reason

Every Christmas, thousands of people become the lucky owners of new Apple iPhones and iPads—but face one massive obstacle.

iPhone users have been complaining about being unable to activate their new devices during set-up, due to busy Apple servers being overloaded by new customers.

The iCloud service Apple uses is reportedly overwhelmed each Christmas and New Year, causing issues with initial device setup, as well as the ability to use key services like iMessage and FaceTime.

One Twitter user said: "Guys got a new iPhone today, ugh why's my iMessage saying waiting for activation for like a few hours now?"

Others reported 'lag spikes' rendering their new devices useless.

A savvy Reddit user advised iPhone users that it is due to everyone trying to activate their devices at once.

They said: "Almost every year it seems on Christmas that Apple's activation servers get overloaded when everyone receives their new devices on Christmas. It doesn't mean there's anything wrong with your new device; just be patient."

What to do if your new iPhone won't activate

There are a few basic steps you can take to try and get your shiny new Apple device up and running if you can't activate it yet.

  1. Turn it off and on again using the power button
  2. Connect to WiFi if you're only on a mobile network
  3. If you receive an error message saying the server is unavailable, try the above steps

The problem was actually acknowledged by Apple last year, who released a statement via their Support account on Twitter.

Replying to a concerned user, the tech company said: "We know your mom is eager to have everything working and appreciate you helping to set them up. We are experiencing a high capacity at this time which is impacting your ability to set up iCloud, please try back in a couple of hours."

Apple products are enormously popular, with the iPhone taking second place in the world's biggest smartphone stakes. The new iPhone 13 brings long-awaited updates to the phone's battery, camera, and much more.
