Spotify launches creepy realistic AI-powered DJ that tells you what to listen to

As if going for the jobs of artists and writers wasn't enough, there's a new target for artificial intelligence: DJs.

The popular music streaming platform Spotify has just launched a new AI-powered feature called 'DJ'.

It uses all the data Spotify has on your music taste to curate a playlist for you, just like a real DJ.

It can even speak directly to users in a 'stunningly realistic' voice, providing commentary for the different tracks and artists it plays to you—just like a real radio DJ.

In a blog post announcing the feature, Spotify said: "The DJ is a personalised AI guide that knows you and your music taste so well that it can choose what to play for you."

The company explained that the 'DJ' combines its personalisation technology, which it already uses to serve up listeners with new tunes, with 'Generative AI' technology and a dynamic AI voice model which can create 'stunningly realistic' voices from text.

It's unclear how different the recommendation engine will be to Spotify's existing personalised music offerings, which serve up the 'Discover Weekly' playlist to users as well as artist and genre stations,

How to try out Spotify's AI DJ

The DJ feature is already being rolled out to Spotify Premium users in the US and Canada today.

To try it out, follow these steps:

  1. Head to the Music Feed page on the Spotify app for Android or iPhone
  2. Tap 'Play' on the card that says DJ on it
  3. The 'DJ' will begin playing you a lineup of personalised music and providing commentary

If you don't like what the DJ has to offer, just hit the DJ button in the bottom right of the screen to switch to a different genre, mood, or artist.
