The Motorola Razr Is Coming Back As A Foldable Android Smartphone

Motorola has resurrected the Razr and it’s poised to hit the market as an Android smartphone that can fold in half.

The company announced as much, confirming the widespread leaks over the device that will cost a hefty $1,499 when it gets released in January of 2020.

The old Razr was immensely popular in its day and can be considered one of the most iconic models of the mobile phone generation. Motorola has kept the general appearance of the cell phone but has replaced the T9 keypad and small LCD with a 6.2-inch foldable, plastic OLED screen.

This isn’t Motorola’s first attempt to bring the Razr back, though. A few years ago, a lineup of generic Droid Razr phones hit the market, with the company simply dropping the name on the devices in an attempt to snare nostalgic customers. The brand was an all caps RAZR during the last try; this time around it’s actually all lower case (razr) but it’s much more than an iconic brand name and is considered to be a worthy heir to the 2004 model.

Of course, the advances in technology have made it so the new Razr’s operations are very different. The lower of the phone is now home to a fingerprint sensor and a USB charging port.

The new Razr isn’t much bigger than a modern phone when opened so it’s obviously spacious enough to accommodate the new interface.

Motorola claims it will last the average lifespan of a smartphone and say they have “full confidence in the durability of the Flex View display” amid concerns over the folding function.

The Samsung Galaxy’s Fold issues are to thank for that but Motorola worked with Lenovo on designing the hinge for the new Razr, which is why they’re certain it will hold up.
