Fifty years ago, both the US and Russia possessed enough nuclear weapons to wipe out the entire planet several times over.
Despite the terrifying apocalyptic capabilities already possessed by these two hot-headed military powers, it seems that Doomsday wasn't enough—as both countries are now pouring resources into near-unstoppable hypersonic missile technology.
The US military has revealed that it successfully tested a hypersonic missile for the second time on Monday.

The 'Hypersonic Airbreathing Weapon Concept' (HAWC) was built by Lockheed Martin and the Pentagon and flew 300 miles at five times the speed of sound.
The US military says that it now has two 'feasible' hypersonic missile designs to develop in future and 'enhance future US Air Force capabilities'.
It's the second hypersonic missile test by the US. The first took place in December, when the US military launched a test missile from a long-range B-52 bomber off the coast of California.
At the time, the Pentagon claimed the test was a success with 'all objectives met' and that the weapon 'detonated in the terminal area'.

The idea behind hypersonic missiles is that they are so fast they can evade traditional air defence systems.
Last year, Vladimir Putin threatened to deploy Russia's hypersonic Satan-2 nukes which could destroy the UK within 6 minutes.
Meanwhile, British forces are working on their own hypersonic missiles in the form of the 'killer Penguin' project.
Work began three years ago on an insanely fast military craft called the Hypersonic Air Vehicle Experimental (HVX) Programme.
The MoD is developing this programme as part of a £2bn project with the Armed Forces.
It's admittedly a lot of money to spend on global devastation, particularly when public services are in such a bad state. But who will need a doctor's appointment when we've got nuclear fallout to deal with?
