TikTok creators could start charging users to view videos, as part of a major shakeup of the popular video app.
According to a report by The Information (which ironically has a paywall), the social media company is developing a 'paywall' feature that would allow creators charge 84p ($1) or more to watch certain video clips.
Fortunately, it wouldn't apply to all videos so you would still be able to use the app for free.

However, it would make TikTok similar to apps like Instagram which allow creators to share exclusive content to paying subscribers.
The social media giant is also said to be working on a 'creator fund' which rewards accounts that make popular videos.
The company first created a $1 billion fund in 2020 to pay creators over three years, but was criticised for low payouts for viral videos.
TikTok is reportedly said to be testing the fund in France and Brazil, and could launch it in the USA next month.
It is also considering increasing the follower requirement from 10,000 to 100,000 for creators who want to access the fund.

TikTok has not commented on the rumoured changes, but said in a statement that it is looking at new ways to develop a 'rewarding experience' for users of its platform.
It's worth noting that, while TikTok is free, users already 'pay' for the platform in the form of watching advertisements between videos.
The company also offers insights into user data to help marketing firms and corporations target users with ads.
Businesses are even able to spend money on ads on TikTok to take advantage of this. So, just remember: if you're not paying for social media, it's because you're already the product.
