Vagina Chip ‘walks, talks, and quacks like a human vagina’, claims scientist

Scientists have successfully recreated the microbiome of a vagina on a chip, in a major medical breakthrough.

The Vagina Chip replicates the biology of a vagina and can be tested with different strains of bacteria, giving scientists a way to develop new medical treatments for a condition called bacterial vaginosis.

This can massively increase the risk of STIs as well as premature births, and is currently treated with antibiotics.

Scientists hope the Vagina Chip is realistic enough that they'll be able to test new treatments for the condition.

One of the researchers behind the Vagina Chip, Don Ingber, said: "The chip is more realistic than other laboratory models of the organ. This walks, talks, quacks like a human vagina."

It was made with cells donated by two women, which were grown inside of small rubber chips which can mimic the vaginal microbiome.

This means scientists can measure the effect of different bacterias on the health of the human vagina without putting human patients at risk.

They can create Vagina Chips with perfect bacterial circumstances, and then introduce other 'bad' microbes to test what the impact is on reproductive health.

Abidemi Junaid, another research scientist involved in the study, said: "It was very striking that the different microbial species produced such opposite effects on the human vaginal cells, and we were able to observe and measure those effects quite easily using our Vagina Chip."

The Vagina Chip is just one of many 'organs on a chip', which give scientists a safe way to test new medicines on organ cells before moving to human clinical trials.
