Instagram users having been firing the app up this week to find that things have changed a bit while they’ve been away.
An unprompted update to the app has switched the feed’s usual white background to black.
And while Instagram says the move is designed to make the app more immersive, not everyone is convinced.
Some say the new dark theme makes it harder to read the captions.
‘We know the future of videos and the future of photos are mobile-first, they are 9:16, they are immersive, so what you’ll see is us testing out taller photos and taller videos in your feed.’
How do I change it back?
If you’re not a fan of Instagram’s new look, you may be wondering how you can switch back to the white background.
@instagram how can I can change this black background, I can’t stand it ð©
Android users can find the options in the settings menu within the app. Simply tap on your profile picture on the bottom of the screen and then the three horizontal bars at the top.
Click on Settings and then Theme and you can toggle between light and dark mode.
If you’re using an iPhone then it’s a bit trickier. Instagram will likely be copying your device settings, so you need to head to the main Settings app and scroll down to Display and Brightness.
Under the appearance option, you can toggle between light and dark or have your iPhone automatically shift with the rising and setting of the sun.
