Why you should never change an autocorrected word right away- even if it’s wrong

Autocorrect, while often helpful, is possibly one of the most infuriating inventions of all time.

If you’re trying to write a speedy WhatsApp message, you might find yourself wanting to smash your phone after changing the same word for the THIRD time when autocorrect refuses to believe you know how to spell.

And let’s not mention the ‘ducking’ problem.

If any of this sounds familiar, you might want to change what you’re doing whenever it gets something wrong…

Because apparently it’s not good to immediately correct the word, however irritating it might be to leave it.

Your phone is constantly cross-checking what you’re typing against a huge digital dictionary.

It tries to work out the correct word you’re looking for by asking itself three questions:

1. Which words in the dictionary would make similar tap patterns?

2. Which word is more common – and how much more common is it?

3. Which of these words does the user frequently type?

The software will then replace the word it thinks is wrong with its best suggestion.

If that’s completely ridiculous, you’ll want to change it back straight away.

But don’t. Wait until you get to the end of your message.

According to Ken Kocienda, former Principal Engineer of iPhone Software for Apple, it’s actually counter-intuitive for you to correct autocorrect immediately.

He told LifeHacker : "This whole process works best if you don’t stop to fix every word.

"It’s much more efficient to type a whole sentence or message, then proofread at the end.

"That’s what the system was designed for, and what works best in Apple’s user testing."

Keyboards work best recognising mistakes when they’re examining longer passages.

And you never know, once you get 10 words further down the sentence it might realise it’s made an error and correct itself anyway.

Learn to trust autocorrect and it’ll get more efficient.

Or you could just turn it off… which is another valid option.
