The last few years have seen an unprecedented rise in handwashing and public hygiene messaging.
Whether it's hand sanitiser at the entrance to the supermarket or signs on toilet walls, the COVID-19 pandemic put the importance of cleanliness front-and-centre.
But the most germ-ridden object of them all remained unwiped and unwashed, becoming public enemy number one in the war on bacteria—all right under our noses.

That's right: your smartphone has ten times more germs and bacteria on it than a toilet seat, and scientists think you should disinfect it multiple times a day.
One study found more than 17000 bacteria on teenagers' phones, while another discovered they have more bacteria than toilet seats.
We fondle our phones thousands of times a day, which means any bacteria on our hands is transferred onto a massive germ brick that is then held up to our mouths and faces.
It's therefore probably a good idea to clean your phone using disinfectant wipes. But beware: if you use rubbing alcohol, it could damage your phone's display, making it unusable.

Disinfectant wipes are probably the best way forward, with Apple and Samsung saying a 70% alcohol disinfectant solution is okay to clean your device with.
Infectious disease expert Dr Simone Wildes told ABC News in 2020: "Given how attached we are to our phones and the frequent use throughout the day, we have to be vigilant about cleaning it to minimize the spread of coronavirus."
With both flu and coronavirus predicted to rise over winter, maybe giving your smartphone a quick wipe once a day couldn't hurt. Even if you're not worried about getting sick, it could at least make your phone screen clearer for watching TikToks.
