Samsung Galaxy phones are some of the best in the Android world but sometimes they don’t get new and exciting features as fast as Google Pixel phones. That’s usually because Google makes Android and likes to keep some software smarts exclusive to its own phones, leaving other Android brands playing catch up.
But thanks to a new report from 9to5Google, it looks like Samsung phone owners could soon get a free upgrade that Pixel users have been enjoying for months in the form of AI wallpapers. Express.co.uk reviewed the Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro earlier this year and found Google has gone all-in on artificial intelligence to help differentiate its phones from the rest of the pack.
One standout fun feature is a wallpaper maker that uses AI to create unique, one of a kind wallpapers. Using a few prompts, you can make a wallpaper that no one else in the world will have, though you can’t type out a full prompt like you might with an AI chatbot like ChatGPT. Instead, you pick a few keywords in a sentence and the phone uses the AI capabilities in its chipset, along with an internet connection, to create the original art.
For example, you can ask for it to make “A painting of a canyon and parachutes in the abstract style”, but you can only pick the words ‘canyon’, ‘parachutes’, and ‘abstract’, and even those are from a list. Despite the limitation, there are thousands of potential combinations, and it’s a fun way to personalise your Pixel.

9to5Google reports that the next big software update for Samsung phones, One UI 6.1 based on Android 14, could bring AI wallpapers to Galaxy phones. It follows a sleuth on X, formerly Twitter, posting screenshots of what they claim is the feature running thanks to the as-yet unreleased One UI 6.1.
It’s likely that One UI 6.1 will launch with the Samsung Galaxy S24 series in early 2024, with the launch event for the phones rumoured to be 17 January. It might be that particular hardware is needed to run AI wallpapers, so this feature could end up being an S24 exclusive. So far, not all other older Pixel phones have not received the AI wallpapers feature, so this could be one you need a smarter smartphone for – not all older phone chips have the right specs to run newer AI processes, it seems.

Google Pixel buyers could be annoyed that yet another feature might not be Pixel-exclusive after all, but it would be another win for Samsung fans.
