Yellowstone’s second prequel 1923 picked up after the harrowing events of episode one which saw Spencer Dutton (played by Brandon Sklenar) almost get mauled to death by a leopard. He was one of the lucky ones who managed to escape with his life, but he is suffering the after-effects of what happened. Express.co.uk has all you need to know about how he is related to Yellowstone’s John Dutton (Kevin Costner).

How is Spencer Dutton related to John Dutton?

Spencer Dutton moved away from the ranch in Montana when he joined the war effort and risked his life for his country.

Although he came out physically unscathed, he was left mentally scarred by the ordeal.

Now working as a hunter of large prey in Africa, he is worlds away from his family back at the ranch.

Episode two saw Spencer win the fight against the leopard, but one of his friends was not so lucky.

Drowning his sorrows in whiskey, Spencer made sure everyone showed sympathy for the guide’s demise.

As one of the breakout stars of the series, fans are wondering how he is related to John Dutton from the original series.

Spencer Dutton is the younger son of James (Tim McGraw) and Margaret Dutton (Faith Hill) from the 1883 series.

He is also the younger brother of John Dutton Sr (James Badge Dale).

As James Dutton from 1883 was John Dutton’s great-grandfather, this makes Spencer one of John’s grandfathers.

Either he or his brother John Sr will have a child who will turn out to be John Dutton’s father, who has been seen in flashbacks in the original series.

Spencer appears to be heading back to Nairobi following the ordeal with the two leopards.

When his wounds were being treated by a doctor back at camp, he confronted the man who hired him for not telling him the whole story.

He was not informed there were two leopards and he failed to show any sympathy after the death of one of the guides.

Threatening the man with his gun, he said the only reason he would not kill him is that he needed a ride back to Nairobi.

Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren) has often written to Spencer asking him why he left the family.

She admitted she thought about him all the time when she was feeling isolated.

Viewers will have to wait and see whether Spencer makes the trip back to visit his family in Montana.

It appears the effects of the war have left him unable to settle anywhere for too long.

Spencer himself admitted he has “no end destination” as he was always on the move.

Viewers are yet to see him settle down with a woman who could be John Dutton’s mother in years to come.

1923 airs on Sundays and Mondays on Paramount Plus.
