Hollyoaks aired one of its most highly-anticipated episodes of the year on E4 this week, as Nancy Osborne finally learned that her husband Darren had been cheating on her with their friend Mandy Richardson.
While the big reveal scenes were pretty dramatic, next week’s tears and turmoil look set to be even more unmissable as the consequences of Mandy and Darren’s betrayal really hit home.
Here, we’re rounding up nine spoilers on what happens next in the Luke/Mandy/Darren/Nancy megaplot.
1. Darren clings onto hope
Nancy has already told Darren to pack his bags and get out, but he won’t be going quietly. Far too used to Nancy forgiving and forgetting his many mistakes, Darren thinks it’s only a matter of time before he’ll be able to worm his way back in.
Darren even plans a grand gesture for Nancy in the hope that it’ll win her over – but no such luck, buddy.
2. The kids discover the truth
With Nancy insisting that it’s all over, the inevitable moment comes when the Osbornes have to sit down with Brooke, Charlie and Oscar and explain that they’ve decided to separate. Keen to make it as easy as possible for Nancy, Darren takes the blame for everything.
In his recent chat with Digital Spy, Hollyoaks boss Bryan Kirkwood tipped this scene as one to watch. He told us: “There’s a devastating scene, when Nancy and Darren sit down with Charlie, Oscar and Brooke to reveal that they’re breaking up. It absolutely broke me to see it as it’s really emotional, and I think it will chime with a lot of the audience at home.”
3. A kiss goodbye?
After their emotional heart-to-heart with the kids, Nancy and Darren try their best to comfort each other and they end up sharing an emotional kiss in the heat of the moment.
While ‘Dancy’ fans may take this as hope for the future, it’s already been confirmed that they’re actually splitting up for the foreseeable. So is it a kiss goodbye for the popular and long-running couple?
4. Tom tries to be a tough guy… and fails miserably
The Hollyoaks autumn trailer recently teased a hilarious moment where Tom Cunningham decides to make Darren pay for his latest terrible mistake.
Jumping into an argument between Darren and Luke, an over-eager Tom lashes out at the love rat by punching him. While Dazzle barely reacts, it’s Tom himself who flinches away in pain and grabs his hand. We wouldn’t recommend a career in boxing.
5. Luke is tempted to fall off the wagon
The news of Darren and Mandy’s affair will also hit Luke hard. While he’s known for a while that Mandy had been cheating on him, he never imagined it was with his best mate. (Even though there were more than a few signs he should have spotted!)
Next week, Luke contemplates drinking again but his son Ollie is furious that he’d even consider breaking their pact. Brody advises Ollie to support his dad and show him he’s not alone – will this be enough to keep Luke on the straight and narrow?
6. Luke leaves
Gary Lucy is currently taking time away from Hollyoaks to star in a stage tour of The Full Monty and his on-screen exit as Luke is imminent. Next week, Luke is due to face court for his recent attack on Scott, but rather than facing the music, he considers doing a runner with his son Ollie.
Brody catches Luke and Ollie when they’re loading the car with bags, but he begs them not to go as Ollie is the main witness in Buster’s trial. Will this give them both food for thought?
While the exact details of Luke’s temporary departure haven’t been confirmed just yet, it’s been revealed that Gary Lucy has already agreed to film some more scenes to continue the storyline.
Bryan Kirkwood told us this month: “I can confirm that Gary will be back intermittently. He’s filming with us again very soon. There are still some scenes for him to shoot as part of the Buster abuse story, as well as the fallout from Darren and Mandy’s ongoing relationship.
“We’re also hoping for a full-time return at some point.”
7. Nancy plans revenge
Nancy won’t be taking Darren’s latest betrayal lying down. After considering her options, she decides that revenge is a dish best served… by sly Sienna Blake.
When the courts decide to brush aside the small matter of Sienna killing someone, she becomes a free woman again and Nancy is waiting for her outside the courthouse.
Nancy wants to team up with Sienna and target Darren with an epic payback plan, but a newly-reformed Sienna isn’t too keen. Can Nancy talk her round, or will she have to find another ally instead?
8. Nancy and Kyle revisited
Kyle’s involvement in this story may come as a surprise since he’s been so tied up with James and Sami this year, but let’s not forget that he and Nancy were once a couple. The show will be revisiting their friendship in a top-secret new storyline that starts later in the year.
Speaking about their future story, Adam Rickitt – who plays Kyle – recently told OK!: “It’s definitely emotional, it’s quite a long burner as well. It goes on for a year or so there’s lots of ups and downs to it. You do see, and it’s such a cliche, him going on an emotional journey.”
9. The story runs and runs
While it may seem like this is a story that’s coming to an end, there’s actually lots more to come for Nancy and Darren as they plan a divorce and try to rebuild their lives away from each other.
Jessica Fox, who plays Nancy, told us this week: “Nancy and Darren will still have scenes together, because of the kids. They’ve also got to get through a divorce and everything else, so there’s going to be lots of drama with that.
“The writers are concentrating on the saga of Nancy and Darren, which is in no way, shape or form finished yet.”
Hollyoaks boss Bryan also said: “Nancy and Darren will be on very different paths for the time being, but their children are a reason for those characters to always feature in each other’s lives and each other’s stories.”
Hollyoaks airs weeknights at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look screenings at 7pm on E4.
