A Place in the Sun presenter Jean Johansson was tasked with finding an idyllic holiday home in La Cala de Mijas, Spain, for long-distance couple Denise and Stephen on Wednesday’s episode of the Channel 4 property show. While Jean hoped she’d be able to impress the couple with her first choice of property, she was soon left red-faced when the couple completely picked it apart.
During the episode, Denise and Stephen explained to property expert Jean that they were ready to move in together after living in different counties in the UK for some time.
They were drawn to La Cala de Mijas as Denise used to adore living there a decade ago.
With the support of their children behind them, the couple told Jean that it felt like the perfect time to buy a home together.
But would the presenter be able to find the right property for the lovers within their modest £140,000 budget?
Denise and Stephen explained they were searching for a property which included two bedrooms, two bathrooms and stunning sea views.
While Jean thought she would be able to impress the couple with the first property she selected for them, the presenter was left feeling awkward when they declared their hate for it before even stepping foot inside.
Denise explained she didn’t like the look of the building and apartments around the property.
Stephen chimed in: “It’s claustrophobic to me.”
Jean tried to convince the couple that they might be pleasantly surprised by the inside of the home.
“You two were so happy at the pool,” Jean stated.
When they reluctantly stepped inside the property, Jean noticed they were being “very quiet”.
Jean said: “You’re being very quiet, so that means you probably have a lot to say, so just tell me.”
Stephen replied: “It’s just not doing it for me, it’s just too small.”
Denise added: “I am not wowed, this just doesn’t excite me.”
Determined not to give up on her property search, a sheepish Jean asked the couple to have faith in her other four choices.
Luckily, Denise and Stephen were impressed with the second property Jean showed them around.
Stephen explained: “We were really flat after the first property, but this one has lifted our spirits.”
After having an extensive look around the second property, the couple told Jean that the house was a contender – but they admitted they thought the interior was a little dated.
Astonishingly, the last property Jean picked out for the couple was where Denise once lived a decade ago.
When taking a look inside Denise said: “I like the open plan, the balcony is still really wide. I am still taking it all in. But I love it, it’s spacious and the balcony looks huge.”
After the final viewing, Stephen admitted: “Before coming out I was a bit nervous about it because it is a huge financial commitment, but after having a look at the properties out here I am 100 per cent I want to move out here.”
The following day the couple asked Jean to make an offer for the fifth property – while their initial offer was declined, their counter offer for £124,000 was accepted.
A Place In The Sun airs on Channel 4 weekdays at 3pm.
