Presenter AJ Odudu and her Strictly Come Dancing partner Kai Widdrington appeared on Tuesday’s instalment of It Takes Two to discuss their time in the competition so far. The duo found themselves at the bottom of the leaderboard last week but said they are determined to impress the judges for Musicals Week. During the episode, AJ revealed to Rylan Clark a vow Kai made to her which has helped put her mind at ease.

Rylan asked the duo about scoring 28 for their Paso Doble during Saturday’s instalment of Strictly.

He said: “When I saw your score my jaw hit the floor because I thought it had passion, the cracking dessert floor and to me it was intense. How did you feel?”

AJ admitted she was “one slip away from landing face-first on the judging panel” when she slipped during her routine on Saturday night.

She added: “So just to be able to recover from that, dig my heels in, and get through the end of the dance was genuinely [a relief].”

The presenter told Rylan the slip did throw her off the rest of the routine and agreed with judge Anton Du Beke’s comments about her stiffening up following the blunder.

The duo was also probed about their daring death drop which AJ said she “absolutely loved” performing with Kai.

“If there is one part of a routine which can be stiff, it’s a death drop, you have to seize up and fall.”

Reflecting on the dance, AJ opened up on a vow Kai made to her about their time in the competition together.

She said: “And genuinely, Kai always says to me, ‘AJ I’ll never drop you.’

“And he hasn’t and he didn’t on the night, so yes, I loved doing it.”

Rylan interjected: “Please, never drop her, she’s too precious.”

AJ and Kai were saved by the public last weekend who were “outraged” they were at the bottom of the leaderboard.

Dancing the Paso Doble, the couple hoped to continue their good form on the dance floor, but they received some harsh feedback from the judges.

Looking ahead to this weekend’s Musicals Week, AJ and Kai revealed they will be doing the Waltz to Edelweiss from The Sound of Music.

Kai told It Takes Two viewers: “It’s going well so far, it’s another ballroom dance and ballroom dancing has gone consistently for us.

“Touch wood, we will have another consistent week.”

He added: “Coming off the back of last week, we want to come back fighting and this is the perfect dance for us.”

He said he wanted to show the quality he and AJ have been working on to the judges.

“We haven’t got a big crazy number, it’s really understated and it’s the perfect dance for us to come back with,” he added.

Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturday at 6.45pm on BBC One.
