Alex Jones breaks down in tears on The One Show after five months without seeing mum

The One Show’s Alex Jones was left emotional after being surprised by her mother via video link, who she hasn’t seen in five months.

The presenter, 43, broke down in tears after her mum Mary appeared by surprise as she hosted the show alongside Alex Scott.

The hosts were reading messages from viewers when Mary appeared on the screen, much to the shock of Alex.

The former England footballer said: “A message from Mary now who's from somewhere near Swansea who says she can't wait to see her daughter, who she says she hasn't seen in 16 weeks.”

Suspecting what was happening, Alex put her hand to her chest as she realised it was actually her mum.

Her co-presenter continued: “In fact, she can't wait any longer and here she is, actually.”

Holding back tears, as she covered her face with her hands, mother-of-two Alex said: “Hi mum! It’s only going to be – how many days now five?”

Mary was equally emotional as she revealed she hadn’t seen her daughter in “five very long months.”

Alex said: “This is the first time I've seen her get quite emotional.”

The presenter, who has been hosting the show five days a week during lockdown, revealed that she would be away for two weeks to reunite with her family.

She said: “It's been a real privilege to come to work every day with you lot.

“And thanks, as well as my family, for getting me through this really weird time.

“It's been a real honour to do this job.”
