BBC Breakfast's Jon Kay was left mortified after suffering a nightmare wardrobe blunder live on air.

The 52-year-old's first official day on the job as a permanent co-host was postponed last week after he tested positive for Covid.

However, Jon was back and raring to go on today's show, but it didn't go exactly as planned.

Jon was presenting live from Cambridge amid the UK's extreme heatwave, which will see some parts of the country face 41 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile Carol Kirkwood was on location in central London to provide crucial weather updates.

Unfortunately for Jon, he had to stop mid broadcast after a pigeon pooed on his smart cream linen jacket.

He said to Carol: "Carol, have you got any tips for removing bird poo from linen jackets? Because I've just been splatted by a pigeon."

Carol burst out laughing before suggesting: "Try one of these wet wipe things – it might spread it a wee bit, but if you use a few…"

Jon looked dubious and said: "It could get messy, couldn't it? I'm slightly anxious about doing this. I've also got another jacket – maybe we'll go for that option for now and hit the dry cleaners a bit later!"

The presenter dabbed at his jacket but the stain wouldn't budge, and he said: "Right, I'm going off to dab my jacket, we'll try and get that sorted.

His co-host Nina Warhurst – who was in the BBC Breakfast studio – said: "Jon, it might not feel it right now, but bear in mind that that delivery is considered good luck!"

Jon replied with a pout: "Yeah, but not for my jacket."

Nina joked: "Not feeling the fortune this morning? Jon, we look forward to seeing what you change into."

Jon returned moments later in a navy blazer, but some wondered why he didn't just ditch the jackets altogether considering the high temperatures.

One BBC Breakfast viewer wrote on Twitter: "Maybe just take jacket off? Really no need in this heat for a jacket!"
