BBC presenter quits after 35 years but ‘hasn’t got a clue’ about what’s next

BBC presenter Mike Liggins is leaving the broadcaster after working there for an impressive 35 years, and his last day will be October 6.

Look East host Mike told his social media followers: “After 35 years, I’ve decided to leave the BBC.

“Time for a change. But what an adventure! I feel very lucky. I’ll be on Look East till Oct 6th… And after that, I haven’t got a clue!

“For now, I just want to say thanks to all my colleagues and to you the viewer/follower. Mike x.”

He shared a photograph alongside the statement of himself side-by-side with his younger self at the start of his career.

Mike, known as Liggo, joined the BBC in back in 1987 after launching his broadcasting career three years prior.

BBC spokesperson Robert Thompson said: “Over the last 35 years, Mike has made more than 6,500 TV reports for Look East.

“He always gets the heart of a story and has a brilliant way with words.”

Swarms of people commented on Mike’s emotional post, with Classic FM’s Zeb Soanes writing: “All the very best, Mike, the sky doesn’t fall in once you hand over your pass, I promise you.”

Danny shared: “I remember the guy on the left. What a great stint and a reporter who I long admired for getting the tone right – especially on the lighter stories which are the hardest ones to do. Good luck Mike.”

Mark said: “Wow, that really is the end of an era, gutted to be honest, you are genuinely a lovely guy. Loved welcoming you into our home between 6.30pm and 7pm on weekday evenings.

“Good luck Mike in your next adventure and keep us posted on what it entails, Look East won’t be the same.”

“We will certainly miss you, your humour and your wonderful storytelling,” ITV News correspondent Natalie Gray said. “Good luck in whatever you decide to do Mike – very best wishes x.”

Elaine Smith wrote: “Mike you are one of the best at what you do and a lovely person, a joy to work with. Such a sad loss for BBC East and all the viewers. I wish you all the best for the future whatever it holds xx.”

Look East airs on weeknights on BBC One at 6.30pm.
