Fans were recently delighted after ITV announced that Big Brother is set to make a comeback.

Following hot on the heels of reboots including The Big Breakfast and Gladiators, Big Brother is another iconic TV series that viewers have been longing to see back on our screens.

However, the original series, which aired on Channel 4 and later Channel 5 between 2000 and 2018, was not without its controversies.

From its reality TV series to celebrity editions, Big Brother was embroiled in racism rows, affairs and abusive behaviour that shocked viewers.

Here, Daily Star takes a look at some of Big Brother's biggest controversies.

'Wine bottle sex'

Big Brother has been known for a racy moment or two – but one incident in particular left both the housemates and viewers speechless.

Housemate Kinga Karolczak appeared on the series in 2005, but after becoming drunk, she went outside and appeared to pleasure herself with an empty wine bottle.

She also flashed at one of her fellow housemates, before appearing to pleasure herself with the wine bottle yet again into the early hours of the morning.

Celebrity Big Brother affair

Hollyoaks actress Stephanie Davis entered the Big Brother house for its 2016 celebrity edition, with her boyfriend Sam Reece waiting for her to return at the end of the series.

However, their romance was not meant to be, after Stephanie embarked on an affair with fellow housemate and model Jeremy McConnell.

The two could be seen kissing and cuddling in the house, leading Stephanie's boyfriend Sam to release a statement in which he dumped the star.

Jeremy and Stephanie later left the house as a couple and welcomed a child together, but their romance eventually came to an end.

Jeremy Jackson pulls Chloe Goodman's robe

Chloe Goodman was left in tears after housemate Jeremy Jackson pulled her robe and exposed her breast while they were alone in the bathroom together.

Ex On The Beach beauty Chloe had been helping him after a drunken Jeremy felt sick, but was left shocked and broke down in tears following Jeremy's actions.

Fellow housemates including Nadia Sawalha quickly comforted the star and intervened to help her.

Jeremy visited the diary room the day after the incident to apologise for his actions, saying he would "accept all ramifications" for his behaviour, with the housemate later removed from the show.

Speaking about the incident on This Morning, Chloe said that she felt unsafe in the house afterwards/

"It affected me because I was really comfortable, you're in a show that you've got security, you've got producers, you know, you think nothing can touch me in here," said Chloe.

She added: "Then as soon as he had me on his own in the bathroom I felt like he was waiting for Michelle and Cami to leave to go ahead and do what he did.

"That's why I felt really vulnerable quite quickly and then after that I didn't feel the same in the house."

Shilpa Shetty and Jade Goody racism row

One of the biggest controversies to have hit Big Brother occurred during its 2007 celebrity series, when Shilpa Shetty and Jade Goody became embroiled in a racism row.

Bollywood actress Shilpa was subjected to a number of vile racist comments by housemates including Jade, Danielle Lloyd and Jo O'Meara.

The row sparked outrage in both the UK and India, with advertisers pulling out of sponsoring the show and politicians commenting publicly on the matter.

More than 44,500 complaints were submitted to Ofcom, with both Davina McCall and Dermot O' Leary holding the three housemates to account upon their evictions.

Speaking in the 2019 documentary Jade: The Reality Star Who Changed Britain, Davina said: "I remember almost immediately thinking this is a bad combo. Three British young girls all coming together and forming a gang basically.

"It started to be bullying and I was like you are careering off the tracks. You are so badly going in the wrong direction."

Following the controversy, the decision was taken to ban audiences from outside the Big Brother house when Jade Goody was evicted, following concerns of riots and violence.

Jade also donated her fee for appearing on the show to charity and, speaking to Davina outside of the house, she apologised, saying: "I am not a racist and I sincerely with my hand on my heart apologise to anyone I’ve offended out there."

Jo and Danielle also all apologised after leaving the Big Brother house, with Jo commenting: "I didn’t ever mean it in that way. I'm not a racist person at all. I know that I’m not. I didn't even know I was doing it then, it wasn’t a personal attack on her."

Racist removal

Just nine days into Big Brother's eighth series, Emily Parr was kicked out after she called pal Charley Uchea the N-word.

Charley said she wasn't offended, but did admit she was shocked Emily had used the racist word.

Regardless, Big Brother bosses kicked Emily out of the house for her use of the disgusting language.

'Punch-gate'

Emmerdale star Roxanne Pallett took to the diary room in 2018, after accusing Coronation Street actor Ryan Thomas of punching her.

The incident, which became known as "punch-gate", saw her accuse Ryan of being a "woman beater" and crying in the diary room.

Ryan was later given a formal warning by Big Brother bosses.

However, fans threw their support behind Ryan after cameras caught their exchange on screen, which saw the two stars play fighting.

Viewers submitted more than 11,000 complaints to Ofcom in support of Ryan, and Roxanne later apologised for "over-reacting" towards the incident.

Speaking during an on-air interview with Celebrity Big Brother host Emma Willis, Roxanne said: "It's a lot to deal with. I’m the most hated girl in Britain right now.

"I am scared about the future… I just want to say I’m sorry."

She added: "I needed to come and tell everyone that I got it wrong. I'm human. I made a massive, massive, horrible mistake."

Daley threatens Hazel

Back in the civilian series in 2013, Daley Ojuderie was kicked out after he threatened his co-star, Irish model Hazel O'Sullivan.

The scenes made for seriously uncomfortable viewing, with Daley gripped Hazel around the neck, swearing at her and pinning her down to the bed.

He told her: "Have some respect for your f***ing elders or I'll nut you one."

Hazel later told co-stars she was "terrified" after her former friend "just flipped out".

She said: "He just turned – the eyes and everything. I had my knees up to his chest trying to push him away, really, really intense."

An investigation was launched into the incident after Daley was removed.

Christopher Biggins axed

Christopher Biggins joined the Celebrity Big Brother house in 2016, and became a hit with fans – before seemingly being removed from the show without explanation.

However, it later came to light that he was asked to leave the Big Brother house after a number of offensive comments during his stint on the show, which led to thousands of complaints to Ofcom.

This included an anti-semitic remark he made to fellow housemate Katie Waissel, which show bosses stated as the reason behind his removal from the show.

Following Christopher's removal from the show, a spokesperson said: "Big Brother has taken the decision to remove Christopher Biggins from the Celebrity Big Brother house.

"Since entering Big Brother, he has made a number of comments capable of causing great offence to housemates and the viewing public. Big Brother does not tolerate offensive language capable of causing widespread offence.

"Christopher Biggins has left the house."

Christopher later apologised for his comments and to Katie, and said during an interview with The Sun that Katie had accepted his apology.

"I found Katie and said 'I am mortified. I would never do anything to upset you. I love you and I'm really sorry,'" he said.

Fight Night

One of the most memorable Big Brother moments over, for all the wrong reasons, so-called "Fight Night" erupted on Day 20 of Big Brother 5.

Things kicked off with a playful food fight before an almighty row erupted among the housemates.

Eventual winner Nadia Almada flipped over a table, Emma Greenwood chucked a tray at Victor Ebuwa, who retaliated by throwing a plate at her head.

Emma then screamed she'd kill Victor, before she was evicted.

Police were even called to the house after the seriously heated incident.

Ken Morley vile outbursts

Former Coronation Street star Ken Morley became a Celebrity Big Brother housemate in 2015.

However, his stint also saw the star removed following a string of inappropriate comments and behaviours – including leering at his fellow housemates and saying he would go into the bathroom to look at them.

He was also heard saying that the women in the house had "some of the best looking a***s he'd ever seen".

Following the misogynistic comments, he also made a vile racist remark about Frank Bruno and was removed from the Big Brother house soon afterwards.

A spokesperson for Big Brother said at the time: "Ken Morley has been removed from the Celebrity Big Brother house for using unacceptable and offensive language following his formal warning."

The actor later apologised for his comments on ITV daytime talk show Loose Women, saying: "I apologise unreservedly to everybody who watched that programme.

"I apologise if I disappointed you by saying what I said.

"It was banter in an odd situation, but I understand entirely I've upset a lot of people from everywhere in the world… I am not a racist. Never have been."
