During Tuesday’s episode of Morning Live, presenters Sam Quek and Gethin Jones welcomed actor Stephen McGann onto the show via video link. The Call the Midwife star, who plays Dr Turner in the BBC drama, spoke to the duo about the upcoming Christmas special. However, during their chat, he revealed the struggle the cast has to endure each year.

With the highly anticipated 12th season of the BBC drama on its way, fans are eager to find out what’s next in store for the group of East End nurses.

The annual Christmas episode of Call the Midwife has quickly become the nation’s must-watch show over the festive period with this year seeing the return of Leonie Elliott (Lucille), Helen George (Trixie) and Megan Cusack (Nancy).

Despite the seasonal special giving viewers a cosy feeling as they see the streets come to life decorated in festive lights covered in snow, sadly that isn’t the case for the actors when filming.

Speaking on Tuesday’s episode of Morning Live, Stephen detailed: “It’s always warm! What we do is we film in April or May.

“Now, if you’re not filming and you have a British Spring, it’s usually pretty lousy.

“If you film a Christmas special I promise you, the sun will come out and we’ll have a heatwave and we have it every single year.”

However, the actor added the snow used on set is getting better and helps give them all get more into the festive atmosphere.

Touching on the impact it has, Stephen continued: “The effect of the snow is incredible!

“It gives you that wintry feeling which does help to see as you’ve got about five layers of clothing on in 80 degrees, so it needs to help.”

Sam replied when watching it, fans never know they filmed it in the middle of a heatwave.

Gethin joked: “We’ll remember that when we’re cosying up on Christmas day to watch it, thinking, ‘He’s really hot it’s about 30 degrees in August!”

Elsewhere in the interview, Stephen teased what viewers can expect to see in the special as they revisit a previous family.

The actor mentioned that in the show, they covered the Thalidomide scandal which happened in 1961.

He said: “It was really important we did this wonderful thing with making a Thalidomide baby, baby Susan, and fictionalising what lots of mothers and children went through when they were injured by Thalidomide.”

The 59-year-old told Gethin and Sam the show didn’t want to just have that particular storyline told in one episode but re-visit the family again.

Stephen continued: “What we do in the Christmas special, is we go and see the Mullocks family again and see how young Susan is doing.”

Touching on the Thalidomide baby in the show, he told the presenters that she’s around the age of eight or nine.

He added: “She’s got different kinds of challenges because of her disability, because of the injury she’s had and that’s very interesting.

“Also, it affects the family too and we’ve gotten to know the Mullocks a few times over the years.”

Call the Midwife is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
