Carrie Underwood Details 'Freak Accident' in First TV Interview Since Stitches: 'It Just Wasn't Pretty'

See Underwood’s reaction when Hoda Kotb tells her she looks “the same.”

Carrie Underwood’s new face made its morning show debut on Thursday, as the singer did her first TV interview since a "freak accident" at her home required her to get more than 40 stitches.

As it was the singer’s first on-camera sit down since the accident, the incident was a main topic conversation for "Today" show host Hoda Kotb.

"Plain and simple, it was just kind of a freak accident. I just fell. I just tripped. Taking my dogs out to do their business," she explained. "It could have happened to anybody. I say if I had fallen anywhere else, it wouldn’t have been a problem. But there was just one little step that I went to catch myself on and I missed."

Underwood added that "it just wasn’t pretty" at first and she was worried "how things were going to end up" following the incident. When Kotb told the singer she looks "the same" now, Underwood laughed before crediting "a dedicated team of professionals who can spackle and paint and paste." She added that, "Everyday I feel a little more back to normal."

After the November 2017 accident, which also left her with a broken wrist, Underwood kept a very low profile before returning to the spotlight with a vengeance at the ACM Awards. Underwood was hailed for her performance of "Cry Pretty" during the show, which Hoda noted was more powerful than she was expecting.

"When you’re singing something that is straight from your heart, it’s easy to just be in the moment and be connected to it," Underwood said. "I never realized how much it translates until after the ACM Awards. It was, like, wow, you know, there was something different about that performance."

Carrie also reacted to getting a standing ovation for the number. "When I’m singing a song, it’s like I’m in the music and I’m right there living it and then it’s kind of like, as soon as a song ends, I’m like ‘Oh man. I’m just Carrie again,’" she said. "It’s like the magic ends somehow and I turn into a pumpkin in front of everybody. I’m not like a center of attention kind of person."
