Christina Aguilera has no plans to return as a coach to U.S. talent show “The Voice“, insisting the show is like a “churning hamster wheel.” The “Beautiful” hitmaker was among the series’ four main mentors upon its launch back in 2011, and returned for six non-consecutive cycles, with her last stint occurring in season 10 in 2016, when she finally won with Alisan Porter.

However, Aguilera won’t be occupying one of the show’s famous spinning red chairs ever again, because despite her upbeat appearance on TV, she was miserable inside.

Comparing the singing competition to a “churning hamster wheel” which became an “energy sucker,” she tells Billboard magazine, “I was longing for freedom.”

“It became something that I didn’t feel was what I had signed up for in season one,” the mother-of-two says. “You realize it’s not about music. It’s about making good TV moments and massaging a story.”

Christina reveals she felt too restricted by production rules. “I didn’t get into this business to be a television show host and to be given all these (rules),” she continues. “Especially as a female: You can’t wear this, can’t say that. I would find myself on that show desperately trying to express myself through clothing or makeup or hair. It was my only kind of outlet.”

But when she finished taping, the singer couldn’t wait to get out of her TV persona. “I would just take everything off – the makeup, all of it – and would blast hip-hop, or Nirvana…, Slayer. Anything like that to get me out of that zone, that TV mode,” she recalls.

Christina confesses she kept returning for further seasons partly because the Los Angeles-based job was convenient while she raised her 10-year-old son Max and her 3-year-old daughter Summer. “It’s easy to get comfortable and cushy in the same place and not have to worry about uprooting your kids,” she shares.

Despite experiencing a series of lows on “The Voice”, Christina was happy to reconnect with pop peer Pink during her guest appearance on the show in 2016, as it gave the two “Lady Marmalade” collaborators the chance to clear the air after falling out back in 2001. “I was so excited – even she was like, ‘Why is she so excited to see me?’ ” Christina recalls of the season 10 get-together, when she served as a coach alongside Adam Levine, Blake Shelton and Pharrell Williams. “I was like, ‘Another female! There’s another vagina in the room! I’m so excited!’ ”

Christina’s candid interview was released on Thursday, May 3, the same day she officially announced the June launch of “Liberation”, her first album in six years.
