Coronation Street boss risks David Neilson quitting over Roy Cropper storyline | The Sun

ROY Cropper is catapulted into the 21st century by his niece Nina Lucas.

Coronation Street boss Iain MacLeod told The Sun that Roy actor David Neilson was against the story.

The soap star has portrayed the café owner since 1995 and grown accustomed to his quirks.

What would Roy be without his technophobia?

However, in recent scenes, Roy was encouraged to embrace the digital age by his niece, Nina Lucas (portrayed by Mollie Gallagher).

"I love this story", Corrie boss Iain MacLeod told The Sun.

"Essentially Nina has bought Roy a smart phone for Christmas, Roy abhors them."

Iain added: "He has a dusty 1990s Dell laptop he occasionally gets out to play online scrabble. That’s probably as far as his digital world extends."

Unwilling to get with the program, Roy gave his phone away.

But he may be convinced to get it back after an unfortunate accident leaves Nina in hospital.

"What starts out as a light-hearted story takes on a much more serious complexion and is about Roy’s love for Nina, and vice versa", Iain teased.

Although he's fond of the story, the producer decided to lay low and hide from Corrie actor David Neilson, knowing he may have pushed things too far for Roy.

"Heard rumours when I got here that David Neilson’s one red line was that Roy would never have a mobile phone", Iain explained.

"When we storylined it, I was hiding in case he was going to go mad while he read the script!"

Thankfully, the 73-year-old didn't storm out of the cobbles.

"In the end he didn’t [get mad], he really appreciates the comedy behind it."

As mentioned above, recent scenes have shown Roy how much a mobile phone can change in his life.

During Monday's trip to Weatherfield, Roy was left helpless as Nina was desperate to reach him in the woods, convinced he was at risk.

Sadly, this resulted in her slipping and falling into icy waters, banging her head in the process.

Nina was rushed to hospital and Roy was awash with guilt when he realised the ordeal could have been avoided.
