Roy (played by David Neilson) has been one of the staple characters of Coronation Street for almost three decades and has been at the centre of some of the show’s biggest storylines, The latest, in which his niece Nina Lucas (Mollie Gallagher) became the victim of a hate crime attack has resulted in his exit from the ITV soap. It hasn’t been confirmed if the beloved Weatherfield resident has left for good but the actor who plays the stalwart, David, has hinted this could be the end of the line for his alter-ego. So will producers take the decision to kill him off?
After believing he had a part to play in the death of Natasha Blakeman (Rachel Leskovac), Roy began to contemplate his life on the cobbles.
Having lied to the police about how Abi Franklin (Sally Carman) did not have a gun on her during a confrontation with Corey Brent (Maximus Evans), the stalwart felt he was no longer the man he once was.
Handing over his home, his business and his assets to his niece, the icon bid farewell to Weatherfield for much warmer climates.
He told Nina he had found a job in South America as a chef and he was going to explore what the world had to offer him.
The legendary character left a wake of devastation in his path as those he left behind her heartbroken over his exit.
Viewers of the show were a little disappointed this was how the stalwart was going to leave after a quarter of a century.
No official word has been given as to whether Roy will return to the cobbles but the actor who plays him has teased he won’t be making a comeback.
David explained: “I’m 72, obviously. When Corrie aired Norris’ funeral, we had a scene with the hearse pulling up – and because of Malcolm Hebden, I thought, ‘I’m really sorry that I won’t get to work with him again.’
“But there are two exits in this for me: one for the character and one for David. Hopefully, they won’t coincide – maybe they will.
“I know Roy leaving will get a reaction. It’s a big part of your life and a big part of that popular culture. He will be remembered for a long while,” he told Inside Soap Magazine.
Roy leaving will get a reaction
With such a sombre tone to the discussion about his character’s exit, it seems David’s time playing Roy might finally be over.
For this reason, the character might not return to the cobbles and instead, the news of his death could reach his loved ones back home.
Having been working in South America for a few months, the New Year could see the stalwart involved in a tragic accident.
Unfortunately, with medication unable to save him, he could die off-screen as the drama would be happening away from Weatherfield.
Fans would learn he has passed away as Nina is given the heartbreaking news from the authorities as his body would be brought back to the UK.
Nina and Carla Connor (Alison King) would begin making preparations for Roy’s funeral, to give him the send-off he deserves.
The residents of Weatherfield would come out to pay their last respects to the man who has provided them with such support over the years.
It would be a fitting end to his 26-year stint but viewers might be upset over the fact he wouldn’t have made a physical return to the show.
Having lost all her family, including Roy, Nina would be at breaking point as she would feel she has no one left in the world looking out for her.
Mollie, the actress who plays Nina, has spoken about her character’s reaction to the news Roy was leaving and how she would feel.
The soap star said: “Although Nina is strong, she feels like it is one awful thing after another right now for her.
“We have seen her spiral out of control before after Seb [Franklin]’s death when she was abusing alcohol and this situation would be even worse because she will have lost both Seb and Roy in the space of a few months.
“I would hate to see what she would do because she will have no one,” she added, explaining her character would feel as if she were reliving her parents’ death all over again.
“It’s really sad because Nina has had a lot of people leave her and she has lost everyone that means the most to her – now Roy is leaving too.
“When her dad left her, it was because her dad died and she remembers that her dad told her that he would have loved to spend more time with her but obviously he couldn’t.”
“But she [felt] like Roy leaving [was] different because Roy [was] making the decision to leave her and it [was] his choice,” Mollie added.
Taking to Twitter, some fans have shared their reactions to his exit, with Clare posting: “If Roy has actually ‘left’ then I’m sorry, but that wasn’t a good enough goodbye/farewell for his character #corrie.”
“Just catching up and I had no idea Roy was leaving. Very down after that #Corrie,” AlpateJoMaya wrote on the social media platform.
Sean added: “Catching up on this week’s #corrie please soap gods tell me Roy has not really left and the actor is just having a good break from the show?”
Will his death be an ending fans will be happy with?
