Cathy (played by Melanie Hill) has been at the centre of huge controversy on Coronation Street recently after snide comments she made about Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) online. Brian (Peter Gunn) took the wrap voluntarily as the residents of Weatherfield were left in an uproar but scenes airing on the ITV soap this week saw his partner confess to being the social media troll. Unfortunately, Cathy’s actions have led to the online community turning on her and her neighbours blacklisting her but could more heartbreak be on the horizon as she decides to make a huge sacrifice that could destroy her relationship with Brian?
The drama will kick off next week when Cathy’s world continues to crumble around her as her boss Dev Alahan (Jimmi Harkishin) gives her a call.
He instructs his employee to stay away from the kebab shop – where she works – as he fears customers will boycott his business over her actions online.
However, her ordeal takes a chilling turn as she arrives back at the Kabin newsagents to find a funeral wreath on the doorstep.
Believing Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford) is behind the cruel threat, Cathy decides to confront her arch-nemesis, who denies any involvement.
Keen to stir the pot, Steve’s wife throws a few insults at Brian’s partner, which leaves her more broken than ever.
With the identity of the person who sent the wreath a mystery, Cathy is later shaken to see a message from the culprit online.
Brian can’t help but feel concerned for his partner and she informs police officer Craig Tinker (Colson Smith) of the trolling she is enduring.
The youngster expresses his sympathy for her situation but tells her the authorities can’t do anything to help her.
Gemma Winter (Dolly Rose Campbell) is horrified when she discovers a deepfake video of her friend circulating on social media.
Deepfake is defined as a video or image in which a person’s face is superimposed onto another in order to gain viral traction.
She is going to leave
With so much hatred arising for her from the trolling on social media, Cathy contemplates her future on the cobbles.
The actress who plays the troubled character, Melanie, 59, has teased her alter-ego is going to make a huge sacrifice in order to rectify her actions.
Speaking on ITV’s Lorraine, the soap star said: “She is going to leave the Kabin. Brian and Cathy obviously bought the Kabin.
“But the business is trouble because everyone has boycotted it and things get quite dark quite quickly.
“So, she feels she wants to protect the people she loves so she decides to move out and it’s just whether how far she goes.”

“Because that’s the big question, she might not go too far,” Melanie teased but this does mean Brian will be left on his own to run the newsagents.
Spoilers have further indicated Cathy’s partner will become concerned when he realises his other half has disappeared without any warning.
Turning to her friends Yasmeen Nazir (Shelley King) and Elaine Jones (Paula Wilcox), Brian tells them he is going to inform the police.
It seems the beloved couple will split as Cathy doesn’t want her partner to face any more backlash over her actions.
Having been together for a few years now, he will be devastated to not only see his relationship end but to see her leave the cobbles altogether.
However, Melanie has explained she has signed a new one-year contract to stay on the show for at least another 12 months.
This indicates the character will rear her head again as the trolling continues but she might have to deal with the repercussions of her relationship ending.
Will Brian ever be able to forgive Cathy for leaving him and going missing when he needed her most?
If the trolling on social media does subside, will there be any hope the two characters could reunite to run the Kabin forevermore?
Taking to Twitter, viewers of the weeknight serial drama have been sharing their opinions on the storyline.
One wrote on the social media platform: “I still don’t understand how Cathy is getting so much hate #Corrie.”
Another posted: “Cathy isn’t nasty at all. This is getting out of hand. It was just a drunken error #Corrie.”
Whilst a third commented: “Cathy has done the right thing, Brian. The truth would have come out soon nevertheless. Honesty is the best policy #Corrie.”
A fourth shared: “#Corrie Annoying seeing how Brian and Cathy are being treated. Dread whenever they pop onto the screen, simply due to how they’re being treated.
“Just grossly unfair, really and truly. What she said wasn’t even that bad, especially compared to what so many others have said online.”
Coronation Street continues tonight at 7:30pm on ITV.
