Coronation Street’s Peter Barlow exits the cobbles as Carla gets emotional

Coronation Street’s Peter Barlow (played by Chris Gascoyne) bids farewell to the cobbles this month after a tumultuous time. Spoilers released by ITV for the Boxing Day episode point to emotional scenes as he and wife Carla (Alison King) say goodbye as he heads off to pastures new.

Peter has been visibly struggling ever since he killed evil Stephen Reid by running him over. With Carla preoccupied with trying to get her factory back on track after Stephen stole her money, the pair have been on a different page for quite some time.

After Christmas Day he realises that he has Carla’s blessing to leave but it doesn’t make their parting any easier. As the cobbles’ resident star-crossed lovers, they have quite a history that has been punctuated by their co-dependency, and as they sit down for one final meal together they have to come to terms with a future without each other.

Reflecting on their relationship and its highs and lows, they come to realise that maybe they are better off apart, which makes up Peter’s mind once and for all. In traditional Weatherfield style, he leaves with nothing but a holdall and the clothes on his back but rather than slipping away quietly his whole family shows up to wish him bon voyage.

The only person missing is his son Simon (Alex Bain) who has already said goodbye to his dad several times in his young life. While the rest of the family are sad to see him go they don’t stand in his way and he promises his father Ken (William Roache) that he will keep in touch.

Carla actress Alison admits that filming Peter’s final scenes for the special episode was just as emotional as it will be for the viewers watching them.

“Even though it doesn’t go into specific details of all their past, it shows what they’re like, as a couple.

“It was really nice to have that much time on them because people seem to enjoy them just having a conversation,” she said.

“It was something to get our teeth into with all the emotions and it was a real journey. It was really, really lovely to do those scenes.

“We were filming solidly together for two days. There was a lot to learn. But aside from that it was amazing, but it was so emotional, I did not need any tearstick for those scenes,” she revealed.

“There was no way of knowing what would happen because every time we did it I literally filled up with emotion and started crying at different times in every scene.

“Just seeing a different look from Chris would set me off because he’s so wonderful at Meisner technique which involves an actor reacting to another actor’s performance and behaviour, he’s so reactive.

“That’s why I’ve loved working with him so much, it’s always about the reaction. We can do things 1000 different ways in each take.

“And he’s so brilliant every single time, it was just a different journey and you’re absolutely spent and it’s such a roller coaster of emotions.”

Coronation Street is on ITV on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm. The 30 minute Boxing Day episode will air at 7.30pm.
