Corrie’s Simon Gregson admits cast live in ‘total fear’ of being killed off in ITV soap

Coronation Street star Simon Gregson has revealed he and his cast mates live ‘in total fear’ of being killed off in the ITV soap.

Simon, who has played the cobbles’ Steve McDonald for over thirty years, spoke out about rumours that a Weatherfield resident will meet their end this year during an interview on ITV’s Good Morning Britain.

As hosts Susanna Reid and Richard Bacon asked Simon, 47, which familiar face viewers will have to wave goodbye to in the coming months, he said: “It’s not me. I don’t know who it is…”

However, the soap star – who took part in last year’s series of ITV’s I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! – then went on to quip: “But now you’ve got me worried because I’ve been out [of] the game so long, I’m not sure if I’ve signed my new contract yet. Who knows!”

Simon continued to say that it’s become part and parcel of being an actor on a soap that you worry that bosses may decide your time is up.

He explained: “You never know when your time’s up. You could be here for life, look at the amazing Bill Roache [who plays Ken Barlow], of course. But also, you couldn’t.”

“You can’t relax as such because one year, they might say, “Look, we’ve decided that you’re out” and that’s it. They like to keep you in total fear.”

And when GMB’s stand-in host Richard asked whether Simon and his co-stars had been panicking and discussing who might be leaving, the actor replied: “I think there’s always an underbelly of nerves throughout the whole cast, wondering how long they’ve got.”

However he then said: “But just like everything, it’s probably easier not to think about it.”

The star then recalled his very first scene on the show back in 1989, as he confessed he will never forget his very first line.

This comes after Simon exclusively opened up to OK! about his experience in the I’m a Celeb welsh castle.

Speaking about signing up to the show, Simon explained: “You’re always worried about being yourself in front of the cameras. In my job, you never really get the opportunity to see that side of you.”

“So it was more a case of just trying to be yourself, relax and not put yourself under any pressure.”

But Simon went on to say that he felt totally comfortable in the castle and was happy he had the chance to show another side of himself to TV viewers.

He said: “Because everyone in there was so lovely, it made it easy to be yourself.

“So it’s nice that people have been able to see someone who otherwise they’d only really know as Steve McDonald."
