Netflix’s critically-acclaimed series The Crown is going to look a lot different when it returns for its third season. After all, each of the show’s main characters, including Queen Elizabeth II herself, is being recast.
That’s because a decision was made to swap out the actors with new ones every two years as the series progresses through history. All of the performers have been replaced with older actors for a season that will take the storyline into the 1970s.
So what are all of the cast changes that are taking place? Who are the new actors? Here’s what we know.
Olivia Colman will replace Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II

In the lead role of Queen Elizabeth II, Olivia Colman will be stepping in to replace Claire Foy. Colman, known in part for her role on the BBC drama series Broadchurch, is 10 years older than Foy.
Recently, Netflix released the first photo of Colman in the role.
“I’m so thrilled to be part of The Crown, I was utterly gripped watching it, a proper ‘just one more’ feeling,” Colman said when she was first cast. “I think Claire Foy is an absolute genius, she’s an incredibly hard act to follow, I’m basically going to rewatch every episode and copy her!”
Tobias Menzies will replace Matt Smith as Prince Philip

In the role of Prince Philip, Tobias Menzies is replacing Matt Smith. Menzies, who is best known for his roles on Outlander and Game of Thrones, is nine years older than Smith. Paul Bettany was actually in talks for this role, but he ended up dropping out, reportedly for scheduling reasons.
We haven’t yet seen any images of Menzies in the part, but Smith certainly approves of him. “He’s a wonderful actor. I worked with him on The History Boys, and he’s a totally fantastic actor,” Smith told the Observer. “I’m very excited to see what he does with Prince Philip.”
Helena Bonham Carter will replace Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret

Vanessa Kirby played Princess Margaret in the first two seasons, but Helena Bonham Carter will be playing that role starting in the third season. Carter is 22 years older than Kirby.
Back in January, Kirby confirmed this news with an Instagram post of herself with Carter, saying in the caption that she is honored.

Season 2 introduced us to Antony Armstrong-Jones, a photographer who Margaret falls in love with. Matthew Goode played that role, but Ben Daniels will take over for him in Season 3. Daniels, a stage actor who has recently appeared on shows like House of Cards and The Exorcist, is 12 years older than Goode.
Shortly after releasing the first image of Carter as Margaret, Netflix also released the first image of Daniels as Tony.
“Snowdon was such a dynamic and complex man, I’m really looking forward to playing him,” Daniels told Variety.
Erin Doherty will replace Lyla Barrett-Rye
Child actress Lyla Barrett-Rye has portrayed Princess Anne in a number of episodes, but for Season 3, Erin Doherty will play the older version of the character.
Jessie Marsh only has a few credits on IMDB, with her first role being Jessie Marsh in a 2017 episode of Call the Midwife.
The Crown Season 3 is expected to air sometime in 2019.
