DCEU boss thinks he's figured out how to fix the franchise: make better movies

The DCEU hasn’t exactly had the best few years, especially when you compare it to its arch-rival Marvel, but don’t worry! DC films’ top team have a cunning plan.

Chairman of film at Warner Bros, Toby Emmerich, revealed as much to Entertainment Weekly, as he reflected on what makes movies popular with critics and the box office.

And, we’re not going to lie, it’s not the most enlightening of strategies.

“I think the good movies work better. Somebody once said the best business strategy in motion pictures is quality,” he mused.

“And I think in a world of Rotten Tomatoes and social media, what’s been proven the better the movie — particularly in the superhero genre — the better it performs. You can’t hide the bacon anymore.”

You heard the man, DC. Just make better films!

Fortunately for the DCEU, Emmerich is hopeful that it can turn its fortunes around with the release of Aquaman later this year – and it’s all to do with the world’s “zeitgeist”.

“We’re at a unique moment around the planet and certain types of movies are working better than others at this moment of time,” he explained. “And I do think Aquaman will sync up with the global culture zeitgeist of what’s happening right now.”

And it’s not only the fans that DC has to impress as it moves forward, it’s the MCU, too – specifically Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus, the writers of Avengers: Infinity War.

McFeely and Markus clearly know how to make a good movie, and also know where where DC is going wrong. “There’s a lot of spaghetti being thrown at the wall,” they recently said.
