Denise Welch felt ‘manipulated’ to do CBB and ‘miserable’ after ‘hollow victory’

Denise Welch has opened up about her time in the Celebrity Big Brother House in 2012 – admitting she felt her victory was hollow.

The frank star told her Loose Women panellists during Friday's edition of the ITV series that she was left miserable by her decision.

She added that while it helped her turn her life around, she regrets her antics inside the camera-filled house.

During a cement about life regrets, Denise said: "I won it but it was quite a hollow victory.

"It was such an intensely miserable time. I actually felt manipulated to making the decision to go in there.

"It was quite destructive for me."

Seeing the bigger picture, Denise continued: "Maybe that was a catalyst for me to turn my life around.

"And if I had turned my life around earlier I wouldn't have crossed with Lincoln [Townley] and I couldn't think of anything worse."

Denise time in Big Brother stunned viewers due to her outrageous antics.

The then 53-year-old actress, was filmed topless in the jacuzzi with X Factor bad boy Frankie Cocozza.

She also was locked in a bitter row with Reservoir Dogs actor Michael Madsen.

The Geordie gal admits most of her of most embarrassing moments took place after a glass of wine.

That same year she went teetotal.

Taking to Instagram in 2020, Denise opted up about her new sober life, as she wrote: "This week is Alcohol Awareness Week.

"I had my last drink in April 2012. Next year I'’ll have been sober for 9 yrs. Apart from my children it is the thing I am most proud of. Not only for myself but for the people who love me."

Alongside a throwback snap, Denise continued: "This photo was taken leaving the same event last year and when I was drinking.

"But worse than what it was doing to me physically was what it was doing to me mentally.

"Anxiety, paranoia, anger, fear, depression, shame, you name it. Sobriety has given me my life back and allowed me to deal with life's constant challenges in a clear-headed, balanced way.

"My marriage is wonderful and I nurture it and look after it in ways alcohol doesn't allow you to. My husband being sober also is the anchor to my life."
