Popular daytime soap Doctors has been taken off air this week, after episodes set to air on February 8 and 9 were pulled at the last minute following the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.
The outings, titled ‘Hell is Empty’ and ‘Aftershock’, saw the lives of surgery staff endangered as a bomb explodes during a medical conference.
Scenes throughout the episode would’ve featured characters being pulled from the rubble, with emergency services searching for survivors.
Following the tragic events of the earthquake disaster in Turkey and Syria, the BBC made the decision to pull the episodes.
The news was confirmed by the soap’s official Twitter account at the time, which wrote: ‘In light of news in Turkey and Syria, today’s billed episode of Doctors will be replaced with Animal Park Heroes.’
A singular episode, entitled The Leaving Party, aired the following day (February 9), and saw Daniel Granger (Matthew Chambers) and Zara Carmichael (Elisabeth Dermot Walsh) attending the engagement party of one of Daniel’s friends.
It is thought that this episode was due to air much later in February but was pulled forward due to the stand-alone nature of the plot.
Since The Leaving Party, however, the daytime serial has been off air, with no new offerings scheduled for this week.
During the pulled episodes, former Coronation Street star Wendi Peters was set to make her debut as Dr Nina Bulsara, a new regular character in Letherbridge.
Wendi is best known for having played the role of Cilla Battersby-Brown in Coronation Street between 2003 and 2007, before making a brief return in 2014.
Doctors is currently scheduled to return to TV screens on Monday February 20, though it is as yet unclear whether the episodes shown will be the cancelled ones or if the show will skip these episodes – and the explosion storyline – altogether.
Metro.co.uk has reached out to Doctors for official confirmation.
